The petroleum industry faces mounting pressure to manage produced water sustainably, particularly in arid regions like the Middle East, where freshwater resources are scarce. Balancing environmental regulations, operational costs, and reservoir performance remains a key challenge, especially as waterflooding continues to be a dominant enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method.
In this paper, a total of three methods were prescribed to address this issue targeting the produced water, first the treatment procedures of produced water for reinjection on the ground was introduced which was effective but adding more cost to the operator, second one was Downhole oil water separation and reinjection technology which proved to be valuable, third one was the downhole injection-production integration system which was suitable to the areas with enough underground water resources.
The results indicated that produced water could be recycled and reinjected into reservoir, different approach should be implemented according to the field development stage. Treatment on the ground was the best but adding more labor and economic cost, as for the high water cut oil well, downhole separation and reinjection technology should be more preferred, as for the regions with rich underground water resources, the downhole injection-production integration system will help address the problem of water shortage provided the compatibility meets the requirement.
Produced water reuse is an essential practice in the oil and gas industry, balancing economic production with environmental stewardship. As global energy demands evolve and sustainability pressures intensify, the technology is advancing toward greater efficiency, lower environmental impact, and improved integration with digital and circular economy principles.
Produced water is a byproduct of oil and gas development, and because of its contaminant content and volume, is a significant environmental and logistical problem. This wastewater stream can include suspended solids, dissolved salts, residual hydrocarbons and the leftover treatment chemicals, depending on the reservo...

Produced-water management in the Permian Basin is increasingly shaped by three linked pressures: growing unconventional-water volumes, tightening saltwater-disposal constraints, and severe regional water scarcity in West Texas. The herein-used approach shows that these issues cannot be discussed separately. Historica...

(English) This thesis explores innovative strategies for resource recovery and water reuse from wastewater streams in three key sectors (agrifood, industrial, and urban) by integrating membrane technologies and chemical precipitation. While membrane and chemical treatments have been widely studied independently, this w...
Water and energy are interdependent resources essential for economic development and societal well-being. Consequently, increasing water demand has intensified water scarcity in many regions, a problem exacerbated by climate change. In such contexts, seawater desalination can provide a reliable and climate-independent...

The growing scarcity of freshwater, exacerbated by climate change and population growth, has driven the development and implementation of more efficient and sustainable desalination technologies. This study presents a systematic review of the main processes used to desalinate saltwater, including reverse osmosis, multi...
