Mapping the Intellectual Structure of Green Cloud Computing: A Scientometrics Analysis of Scopus Publications (1990–2026)

Abstract

This study maps the intellectual landscape of green cloud computing by analysing publication trends, thematic evolution, author productivity, institutional contributions, and global collaboration from 1990 to 2026. It is driven by concerns over rising data-centre energy consumption and the need for sustainable digital infrastructure in academic and research libraries. A scientometrics analysis was conducted on 10,084 records from the Scopus database. Data were processed using R Studio with the Bibliometric package, while VOSviewer was applied for network mapping. Bradford’s law and Lotka’s law were used to assess source and author distributions. The field demonstrates strong growth (16.91% annually), with 19,318 authors across 3,473 sources. China, India, and the United States dominate output, while leading institutions include Islamic Azad University and major Chinese universities. Five key research clusters emerge, including energy-efficient resource allocation, edge/fog computing, sustainable data centres, virtualisation, and AI-driven energy management. Beyond description, the study makes three further contributions. It develops a conceptual framework in which the field is shown to have passed through three phases distinguished by their unit of optimisation, moving from the server (infrastructure efficiency), to the topology (distributed and edge architectures), to the control loop (AI-enabled sustainability control). It tests the robustness of its own findings against five alternative corpus specifications and reports that, while the thematic and structural results hold, the identity of the leading producer country reverses when an explicit sustainability term is required. And it measures, rather than asserts, the presence of library and information science in this literature: just 14 of 10,084 documents, or 0.14%, engage library, repository, or preservation settings. That measured absence, together with the contradiction between the field’s expanding output and its contracting engagement with carbon accounting, is translated into operational priorities for library managers, cloud-service adopters, systems administrators, policy makers, and LIS researchers.

Scientometric mapping of global research trends in renewable energy consumption and economic growth

The growing emphasis on sustainable development has intensified scholarly interest in understanding the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth. While extensive empirical research exists, the intellectual structure, thematic evolution, and collaborative dynamics of this research domain remain fragmented. To address this gap, this study conducts a comprehensive scientometric analysis of global research on renewable energy consumption and economic growth using bibliographic data retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science databases covering the period 2005–2024. A total of 2,548 publications were analyzed using Biblioshiny (R package: bibliometrix) and VOSviewer, applying classical scientometric laws (Bradford’s, Lotka’s, and Zipf’s) alongside science-mapping techniques. The findings reveal a sharp acceleration in research output after 2015, coinciding with the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, with China emerging as the dominant contributor and a central hub of international collaboration. The analysis further identifies leading journals, highly cited publications, and a core group of prolific authors that shape the knowledge base of this field. The analysis further indicates a highly dispersed and interdisciplinary knowledge structure, reflected in a high Bradford multiplier, suggesting wide journal dispersion, alongside a concentrated core of prolific authors and evolving thematic patterns. By integrating the Theory–Context–Characteristics–Methodology (TCCM) framework, the study advances beyond descriptive mapping to provide a structured interpretation of theoretical foundations, methodological trends, and policy-relevant research gaps. The results offer valuable insights for researchers and policymakers by identifying underexplored regions, emerging themes, and opportunities for more integrative and impact-oriented research on renewable energy–led economic growth.

Bibliometric Analysis Of The Development Of Digital Systems, Applications, And Products In Data Processing (SAP) During The 2018–2024 Period

The findings indicate that SAP-related publications remained relatively stable with moderate fluctuations, increasing from 42 publications in 2018 to a peak of 53 publications in 2022 and the co-authorship analysis demonstrates the emergence of international collaboration networks involving researchers from various countries in advancing SAP-related studies.

Human Capital Readiness for Cloud–AI–Data Center Ecosystems: A Bibliometric Review

The expansion of cloud platforms, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven applications, and data center infrastructure has increased the need for workers and organizations that can operate, interpret, and govern complex digital ecosystems. However, research on human capital readiness for cloud–AI–data center ecosystems remains fragmented across technology adoption, digital skills, education, workforce development, and human resource management (HRM). This study maps the intellectual structure, thematic development, and research gaps of this field through a bibliometric review of 783 Scopus-indexed journal articles published between 2010 and 2025. Biblioshiny/R Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to conduct performance analysis and science mapping, including annual publication trends, keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, and country collaboration analysis. The findings show that publication activity increased after 2019 and accelerated after 2023, indicating growing attention to digital workforce readiness in the AI era. The analyses reveal a divide between technology-oriented studies on AI, Industry 4.0, cloud computing, and digital transformation and human-centered studies on digital skills, literacy, competencies, and workforce readiness. Co-citation and bibliographic coupling results show that the field is shaped by technology adoption, behavioral readiness, strategic capability, future-of-work research, work psychology, and education-based digital competency development. Country collaboration patterns indicate that Asia-Pacific scholarship remains uneven despite the region’s growing role in digital infrastructure expansion. This study contributes by repositioning human capital readiness as a strategic HR capability linking digital talent development, HR analytics, and workforce planning.

Research on Education for Sustainable Development: A Bibliometric Analysis in the Scopus Database from 2000 to 2024

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver for achieving global sustainability, yet a comprehensive, long-term mapping of its intellectual structure is needed to guide future policies. This study aims to delineate the evolutionary trajectory of ESD research from 2000 to 2024, identify the most significant contributors (countries, institutions, journals, and authors), and uncover the prevalent thematic clusters within this domain. A quantitative bibliometric approach was employed. The sample consisted of 2,774 English-language peer-reviewed documents extracted from the Scopus Core Collection, spanning from 2000 to 2024. Performance analysis and science mapping were conducted utilizing RStudio (Biblioshiny) and VOSviewer to evaluate co-authorship networks and thematic co-occurrences. The findings confirmed a continuous, exponential growth in ESD publications post-2015. Germany emerged as the most productive country (12.5% of total publications), though the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia was identified as the leading institution. Thematic analysis revealed 15 distinct clusters, heavily focusing on higher education, curricula, and teacher training, while also highlighting a significant geographical imbalance wherein developed nations overshadow developing countries in overall research engagement.

Unveiling the Knowledge Architecture of ESG and Sustainability Research: A Bibliometric Exploration of Trends, Networks, and Research Frontiers

As the global Sustainable Development agenda advances, the scale of research in the ESG field has continued to expand. However, the knowledge structure of existing relevant research is scattered across four major disciplines: finance, governance, environmental management, and Sustainable Development, with clear research gaps identified. This study focuses on ESG and SDGs‐related issues in the field of sustainable finance and adopts a bibliometric and science‐mapping approach, using Biblioshiny (R‐Bibliometrix) and VOSviewer for performance analysis and network visualization and takes 8667 journal papers indexed in the Scopus database from 2012 to 2026 as its research sample. The study finds that the annual growth rate of the relevant literature reaches 46.90%; eight core keywords are extracted; and ESG research is shifting toward five emerging directions. In follow‐up work, these themes will be transformed into research questions to build a future research agenda.
