Research on Education for Sustainable Development: A Bibliometric Analysis in the Scopus Database from 2000 to 2024

Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver for achieving global sustainability, yet a comprehensive, long-term mapping of its intellectual structure is needed to guide future policies. This study aims to delineate the evolutionary trajectory of ESD research from 2000 to 2024, identify the most significant contributors (countries, institutions, journals, and authors), and uncover the prevalent thematic clusters within this domain. A quantitative bibliometric approach was employed. The sample consisted of 2,774 English-language peer-reviewed documents extracted from the Scopus Core Collection, spanning from 2000 to 2024. Performance analysis and science mapping were conducted utilizing RStudio (Biblioshiny) and VOSviewer to evaluate co-authorship networks and thematic co-occurrences. The findings confirmed a continuous, exponential growth in ESD publications post-2015. Germany emerged as the most productive country (12.5% of total publications), though the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia was identified as the leading institution. Thematic analysis revealed 15 distinct clusters, heavily focusing on higher education, curricula, and teacher training, while also highlighting a significant geographical imbalance wherein developed nations overshadow developing countries in overall research engagement.

From knowledge structure to implementation: a dual bibliometric study of ESG and the SDGs

This study examines how environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices operationalise sustainable tourism development and contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), addressing persistent gaps in the theoretical evolution and practical implementation of ESG frameworks. A systematic bibliometric analysis was conducted on 189 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Web of Science database, published between 2013 and 2024. The analysis combined co-citation analysis to map established theoretical foundations and bibliographic coupling to identify emerging knowledge frontiers. The analysis identified five theoretical clusters shaping the intellectual structure of ESG research in tourism, with ESG–financial performance integration and stakeholder governance emerging as dominant themes. Eight emerging knowledge frontiers were mapped through bibliographic coupling, highlighting integrated implementation strategies, technology-enabled ESG innovation and cross-cultural adaptation as priority research directions. The findings give tourism executives, destination managers, industry associations and policy makers a structured basis for prioritising ESG action. They indicate where the evidence base is most consolidated, in financial performance integration and in measurement and reporting, and where it remains fragmented, in cross-cultural adaptation and regenerative models, so that investment and standard-setting effort can be directed accordingly. This study contributes a bibliometrically informed implementation framework that links the intellectual structure of ESG research in tourism to specific SDG targets, giving researchers and practitioners a traceable account, of which theoretical foundations underpin which sustainability pathways. The dual design, combining co-citation and bibliographic coupling, maps the established foundations of the field and its emerging frontiers within a single analysis.

Bibliometric Mapping of Vocational Teacher Adaptation in the Era of Industry 4.0: An Analysis of 315 Scopus Documents (2016–2026)

Background of study: The advance of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation has reshaped Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and requires vocational teachers to develop adaptive capacities aligned with twenty-first-century learning demands, yet the knowledge structure and research direction in this area have not been comprehensively mapped. Aims and scope of paper: This study analyzes the intellectual structure, developmental trends, and thematic clusters of research on vocational teacher adaptation. Methods: A total of 315 Scopus-indexed documents, exported in RIS format on 19 July 2026, were examined through performance analysis and science mapping using VOSviewer version 1.6.18. Result: Publication output increased sharply, with more than half of the documents (163 publications) issued in 2025–2026. China, Indonesia, and Malaysia were the most productive countries, although international collaboration remained relatively low at 18.4%. Co-occurrence analysis of 91 keywords identified six clusters within a densely connected network (1,506 links; total link strength = 4,908), covering skills transformation in the Industry 4.0 era, digital competence and literacy, machine learning in engineering education, employability and AI-supported training, adaptive learning and professional development, and digital learning delivery technologies. Research attention remains dominated by learners such as students and apprentices, whereas vocational teachers, the principal actors of technological adaptation, receive limited attention. Conclusion: The field is growing rapidly but remains thematically imbalanced; future research should prioritize the adaptive capacity of vocational teachers, particularly in the Indonesian context, and strengthen international collaboration to enrich scholarly development in TVET.

Unveiling the Knowledge Architecture of ESG and Sustainability Research: A Bibliometric Exploration of Trends, Networks, and Research Frontiers

As the global Sustainable Development agenda advances, the scale of research in the ESG field has continued to expand. However, the knowledge structure of existing relevant research is scattered across four major disciplines: finance, governance, environmental management, and Sustainable Development, with clear research gaps identified. This study focuses on ESG and SDGs‐related issues in the field of sustainable finance and adopts a bibliometric and science‐mapping approach, using Biblioshiny (R‐Bibliometrix) and VOSviewer for performance analysis and network visualization and takes 8667 journal papers indexed in the Scopus database from 2012 to 2026 as its research sample. The study finds that the annual growth rate of the relevant literature reaches 46.90%; eight core keywords are extracted; and ESG research is shifting toward five emerging directions. In follow‐up work, these themes will be transformed into research questions to build a future research agenda.

Women in STEM Education Research, 2006-2025: Knowledge Evolution, Global Collaboration, and SDG Alignment

This bibliometric study maps the development of research on women in STEM education using 348 Scopus-indexed, English-language, open-access publications spanning 2006-2025. Bibliographic records were retrieved on June 12, 2025, and analyzed using Biblioshiny through performance analysis, keyword co-occurrence, co-authorship, co-citation, thematic mapping, and historiographic analysis. The field recorded an annual growth rate of 14.45%, with publication output increasing markedly after 2015 and remaining high after 2020. PLOS ONE was the most productive source, followed by CBE-Life Sciences Education and Sustainability, while highly cited publications by Stoet and Geary and Dennehy and Dasgupta formed important intellectual foundations for research on gender disparities, mentoring, and institutional intervention. Collaboration was extensive: 313 of the 348 documents (89.9%) were multi-authored, and 97.8% of authors contributed to co-authored publications. However, 76% of the scholarly output originated from the Global North, indicating persistent geographical imbalance. Conceptual mapping identified a pedagogical cluster centered on education, gender, students, mathematics, and engineering, alongside a demographic and indexing cluster dominated by female, male, human, and adult. The analysis also revealed limited attention to technology education, intersectional perspectives, and Global South contexts. Overall, the literature is substantively aligned with SDGs 4 and 5 through its focus on equitable access, participation, retention, and institutional inclusion. The findings support more reciprocal North-South partnerships, context-sensitive intervention studies, and stronger integration of intersectional and technology-focused research.

Bibliometric analysis of research trends on internationalization of higher education in Malaysia and Indonesia: Implications for staff roles and sustainable institutional development (2010–2024)

Background and Purpose: Internationalization of higher education has become a key strategy for improving the quality, competitiveness, and global visibility of higher education institutions. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Indonesia have increasingly adopted internationalisation initiatives, generating growing scholarly interest in the field. However, limited studies have systematically examined the development and intellectual structure of this research area. This study provides a bibliometric analysis of research trends on higher education internationalization in Malaysia and Indonesia between 2010 and 2024, with emphasis on implications for staff roles and sustainable institutional development. Methodology: The study employed a bibliometric approach using 91 publications retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection after a systematic screening process. Data were analysed with Biblioshiny in RStudio to examine annual scientific production, research themes, author productivity, country contributions, citation patterns, and collaboration networks. The analysis also identified the most influential documents and countries shaping the field. Findings: The results reveal a steady increase in research output and a growing diversity of themes, including international student mobility, institutional strategies, policy reforms, and cross-border collaboration. Citation patterns show that scholarly influence remains concentrated among a limited number of countries and authors. Malaysia demonstrates strong research productivity, while Indonesia shows increasing scholarly engagement and collaboration opportunities. The findings further highlight the expanding role of higher education staff in advancing internationalization and supporting sustainable institutional development. Contributions: This study offers a comprehensive overview of internationalization research in Malaysia and Indonesia. The findings provide useful insights for researchers, policymakers, and university leaders by identifying emerging research directions, strengthening collaborative efforts, and supporting evidence-based approaches to sustainable internationalization.
