Abstract

The global educational ecosystem currently stands at a profound historical inflection point, chara-cterized simultaneously by rapid technological acceleration and severe structural fragility. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, theoretical discourse in education was largely dominated by a techno-optimistic paradigm, which posited that digital connectivity and the democratization of information would inherently level the playing field, eradicating historical inequities. Furthermore, as the world confronts the existential threat of anthropogenic climate change, educational systems are tasked with rapidly integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to foster a generation capable of navigating and mitigating ecological collapse. Employers are increasingly pivoting toward skills-based hiring matrices, demanding that higher education institutions urgently reconfigure their curricula to prioritize demonstrable competencies over static academic qualifications. This comprehensive chapter provides an exhaustive analysis of the emerging issues and structural challenges currently defining the global education sector. By synthesizing empirical data sets, international policy frameworks, and theoretical pedagogical paradigms, the ensuing analysis unpacks the second- and third-order implications of these trends. The objective is to rigorously assess how these intersecting crises demand the creation of resilient, ethically grounded, and radically inclusive educa-tional ecosystems capable of sustaining human develop-ment throughout the twenty-first century.

Navigating the future of Malaysian Education: A Paradigm Shift towards sustainable competencies and holistic development in the 2027 Curricular reform

The rapid onset of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and increasing global environmental volatility have necessitated a fundamental reimagining of national educational frameworks. This study examines the systemic paradigm shift represented by the Malaysia New Curriculum 2027, a landmark reform aimed at moving the nation from a traditional, performance-centric model to a fluid, competency-based ecosystem. Using an Integrative Conceptual Synthesis methodology, the research triangulates Malaysian national policy foundations with authoritative global benchmarks, including the OECD Learning Compass 2030 and UNESCO’s ESD 2030 roadmap, to bridge the persistent gap between theoretical policy aspirations and practical classroom realities. The analysis identifies critical systemic tensions currently hindering national progress, specifically the “content-density paradox” and the “readiness deficit” regarding digital ethics in the emerging era of generative AI. The primary finding is the proposal of the Sustainable-Holistic Synergy Model (SHSM), which posits that genuine future-readiness is a synergistic outcome of three interdependent pillars: adaptive cognitive flexibility, ethical digital humanism, and stewardship-driven sustainability. The study concludes that the ultimate success of the 2027 reform depends on a radical redefinition of national assessment tools and the empowerment of teachers as facilitators of synergy. Future research should empirically validate these SHSM pillars through longitudinal pilot testing across Malaysia’s diverse urban and rural school landscapes to ensure an equitable and inclusive national transformation

Cooperating for the future of higher education: Walking the talk in the digital bifurcation

Higher education is being reshaped by accelerated digital development in a context marked by multiple crises. Its future becomes an urgent question in a situation that makes the future increasingly difficult to imagine. What should universities' missions, resources, organisational forms, research priorities, pedagogical responsibilities and social commitments be? Can Higher Education Institutions still function as central sites for the production and transmission of knowledge? More fundamentally, should they merely adapt to global transformations, or should they help build a more desirable society? This article approaches these questions through scenarios understood here not as predictive methods but as tools for diagnosis, debate and collective reflection. At the centre of our analysis are digital technologies and the expanding power of Big Tech firms, whose infrastructures increasingly dominate economic life, public culture, state capacities and educational institutions. We therefore develop two contrasting scenarios. The first is dystopian: the colonisation and polarisation of higher education by Big Tech. The second is utopian: a cooperative, research‐led university in which environmentally frugal digitalisation serves democratisation and the development of individual and collective capabilities.

Working Toward a Future-Resilient Technologies Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum: Technologies has been designed in response to pressing national priorities, including food and water security, population health and wellbeing, the growth of the knowledge economy, and the continual transformation of engineering and manufacturing. These priorities underpin the inclusion of two central subjects—Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies—supported by contextual applications across the Foundation Primary year to Year 10. The curriculum is intended not only to be comprehensive but also integrative, fostering meaningful cross-disciplinary connections that provide opportunities for innovation in areas such as food and fibre production and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This paper synthesises key elements of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies and the Digital Literacy general capability, with a particular focus on building a future-resilient curriculum. When developing these documents, international policy frameworks and research perspectives were considered, highlighting the global importance of digital literacy as a threshold capability for lifelong learning. This paper also examines the challenges posed by declining ICT literacy in Australian students, the evolution from the ICT  capability to the Digital Literacy capability, and the conceptual pillars of Computational, Design, and Systems Thinking. Attention is given to the importance of a whole-school approach to implementation, the need for teacher professional learning, and the integration of ethical, sustainable, and futures-focussed practices. Ultimately, this paper argues that the Australian Curriculum: Technologies is central to preparing young Australians, not only for probable futures, but also to equip them to shape their own preferred futures that are sustainable, ethical, and adaptable to rapid technological change.

The Future of Engineering Education: Continuity, Chaos & Collapse, OR Transformation

Postsecondary education is in flux. Recent global, technological, and economic disruptions have impacted long-standing systems, processes and practices that shape tertiary education. Undergraduate engineering programs, many of which continue to use traditional instructor-controlled, content-focused approaches, are struggling with freely available "knowledge", student engagement, and diminishing employment opportunities for their students and graduates. This conceptual paper explores three potential futures that undergraduate engineering may experience in the upcoming decade. The ‘continuity’ scenario highlights the simulated learning and perceived efficiency that comes with generative AI. The ‘chaos and collapse’ scenario foresees cognitive atrophy and the erosion of trust between faculty and students. The ‘transformation’ scenario explores a redesigned system where human judgment is key in a system where humans and machine intelligence work together to perceive, decide, create and act. It then suggests ways forward for engineering educators and administrators as they shape a sustainable future for their programs.

Contextualization of Social Studies Curriculum for Addressing Contemporary Societal Issues in Higher Education

The growing complexity of contemporary societal challenges necessitates a paradigm shift in higher education curricula, particularly in Social Studies. This paper examines the contextualization of the Social Studies curriculum as a viable strategy for addressing pressing societal issues such as unemployment, insecurity, governance deficits, environmental degradation, and digital misinformation in Nigeria. Drawing on a conceptual research design supported by empirical evidence from global and Nigerian settings, the paper argues that contextualized curricula enhance students’ critical thinking, civic competence, and problem solving abilities. Statistical indicators reveal that youth unemployment in Nigeria remains above 30%, while issues such as insecurity and corruption continue to undermine national development. These realities highlight the disconnect between academic instruction and societal needs. The study discusses theoretical foundations, practical strategies, and institutional challenges while offering policy-driven recommendations. It concludes that the successful contextualization of the Social Studies curriculum requires a holistic and collaborative approach involving institutional commitment, policy support, and pedagogical innovation. When effectively implemented, it holds the potential to transform higher education into a powerful instrument for addressing contemporary societal issues and advancing sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond through production of socially responsive graduates capable of driving sustainable development.
