Effectiveness of Student-Centered Fine-Tuning of Large Language Models for Mental Health Support

Abstract

We developed a large language model designed to explore student mental well-being support in conversational settings, aimed at providing accessible, empathetic, and accurate responses to students facing challenges such anxiety, stress, loneliness, and academic pressure. Many students face barriers to seeking traditional counseling, such as stigma, scheduling constraints or discomfort with face-to-face interactions. The system addresses these challenges by offering a potential accessible conversational support channel through natural, conversational interactions with a large language model. Our approach focused on two strategies. Firstly, we enhanced the model's communication style to reflect counseling best practices such as empathy, active listening, and emotional validation. The second strategy is to enhance the model's understanding of mental health scenarios using realworld text sources and instructions. The model was trained on diverse, anonymized datasets from real counseling transcripts, emotional support dialogue corpora, and peer-support forums. We integrated prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and an iterative self-reflection loop to identify potentially unsupported or hallucination-prone responses, with the goal to improve factuality and safety in generated responses. We find that fine-tuning on student-centered data consistently outperforms both baseline and mixed-data approaches, emphasizing the importance of domainspecific adaptation. The model shows potential for confidential support, suggesting possible use as an early stage aid for coping strategies, and connects students to campus resources, reducing barriers to help seeking and supporting academic performance.

Guiding Language Models to Be More Empathetic: Culturally Sensitive Mental Health Advice Generation Through Human-LLM Collaboration

Despite recent advances in large language models (LLMs), their ability to generate empathetic mental health counseling responses in low-resource languages remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we curate 625 authentic mental health cases from three complementary sources: (1) publicly available Facebook posts discussing mental health concerns, (2) transcripts from the Bangladeshi television program"Ami Akhon Ki Korbo", and (3) anonymized student questionnaire responses covering diverse emotional and psychological challenges. Based on these cases, we build an evaluation corpus comprising advice written by licensed clinical psychologists and responses generated by three modern proprietary LLMs: GPT-4o Mini, Claude 4.5 Haiku, and Gemini 2.5 Pro. We further propose the Role-Playing Reflective Chain-of-Thought Advisory Framework (RP-RCAF), a task-specific prompting strategy that combines expert-authored few-shot examples with structured self-reflection to produce supportive, culturally aware, and ethically aligned counseling through a compassionate advisor persona. We also introduce the Grok 4-Based Response Evaluation and Scoring Framework (G-REFS), which integrates automated assessment with expert psychologist validation across emotional sensitivity, cultural appropriateness, linguistic clarity, and ethical soundness. Experimental results show that RP-RCAF consistently outperforms conventional prompting across all evaluated models and produces responses that more closely align with professional psychological counseling.

A Multilingual AI-Powered Mental Health Chatbot Using Gemini API with Conversational Memory and Voice Interaction

Mental health challenges have become increasingly common among students, working professionals, and individuals facing academic pressure, workplace stress, emotional instability, and social isolation [1], [2]. Due to social stigma, limited access to professional counseling, high consultation costs, and language barriers, many people hesitate to seek timely psychological support [3]. To overcome this problem an AI-powered multilingual mental health chatbot designed to provide immediate emotional assistance through natural and supportive conversation. The paper proposes using Google Gemini API integrated with a Flask-based backend and a responsive web interface, enabling intelligent human-like interactions in English, Kannada, and Hindi. To improve accessibility and user engagement, the chatbot incorporates voice input functionality using browser-based speech recognition, allowing users to communicate through speech in addition to text [4]. The system also maintains conversation history to preserve context and continuity. Unlike traditional rule based chatbots, the proposed model leverages generative artificial intelligence to deliver context-aware, empathetic, and language consistent responses without providing medical diagnosis [5], [6]. Experimental evaluation based on simulated user interactions demonstrates improved response relevance, multilingual consistency, and user satisfaction, with strong performance across standard evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score [7].

Empathy through the Lens of Conversational Agents: A Systematic Review

The advent of Large Language Models has accelerated interest in empathetic conversational agents. Despite a surge in empirical research, artificial empathy remains deeply fragmented, often serving as a catch-all term for diverse interactional phenomena. Addressing this conceptual gap, we systematically review 89 empirical studies to map how human-machine empathy is operationalized. Our synthesis reveals that empathy is highly situated and driven by functional goals, like health and well-being, transactional service, social interaction, and learning support. Within these contexts, we classify affective responsiveness by its directional flow, detailing how agents project, elicit, or mediate empathy. We structure the literature into a cohesive framework spanning linguistic, paralinguistic, identity, and architectural strategies. Furthermore, our methodological evaluation reveals a reliance on adapted clinical metrics, a scarcity of longitudinal studies, and a disproportionate focus on text-based over voice-based interfaces. Ultimately, this review equips researchers and practitioners with an actionable foundation for designing, measuring, and implementing contextually appropriate and empathetic agents.

The Capabilities of Large Language Models for Reducing Learning Fatigue

This article investigates the transformative role of large language models (LLMs), specifically ChatGPT, in contemporary education and their impact on learning fatigue. It examines both the potential benefits of LLMs use as personalized learning, automated content creation, interactive tasks, and real-time feedback from one point of view and the emerging challenges, including increased dependence on digital devices and the risk of digital fatigue - mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged screen exposure from the other. The results show widespread familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and moderate relationships between AI use and perceived reductions in learning effort. Frequent use of ChatGPT appears to implement improvements in homework, highlighting the need to further develop students’ digital literacy and prompting skills. The study concludes that the responsible, well-regulated integration of LLMs can enhance learning effectiveness while helping to mitigate risks associated with digital fatigue. This research is relevant for educators and institutions seeking to improve student outcomes through the thoughtful adoption of AI-based tools.
