TL;DR

It is indicated that digital technology has the potential to support students’ active participation, interest and cognitive effort, but its implementation is also influenced by teacher competency, infrastructure, access to technology and the suitability of digital content.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has created opportunities for more interactive and student-centred Arabic language learning. This conceptual paper aims to discuss the integration of digital technology in enhancing student engagement in Arabic language learning. This paper employs a literature review approach by examining and synthesising relevant previous studies. The discussion is guided by the multidimensional concept of student engagement proposed by Fredricks, Blumenfeld and Paris (2004), which encompasses behavioural, emotional and cognitive engagement. The synthesis of previous studies indicates that digital technology has the potential to support students’ active participation, interest and cognitive effort. However, its implementation is also influenced by teacher competency, infrastructure, access to technology and the suitability of digital content. Therefore, digital technology should be integrated systematically and pedagogically to promote more active and meaningful Arabic language learning.
