Media Literacy as a Tool for Developing Creativity in Pre-Service Teacher Education
Abstract
This study examines how media literacy education contributes to the development of creativity among pre-service teachers. In the context of rapid digitalisation, creativity is increasingly recognised as a key competence supporting innovation, problem-solving, and adaptability. A qualitative research approach was employed to explore students’ experiences. Data were collected through three focus group discussions with second-year master’s students at Vytautas Magnus University and analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis. Ethical principles were ensured throughout the study. The findings reveal that media literacy education enhances creativity among pre-service teachers. The use of digital tools, such as video production and social media, promotes creative thinking, collaboration, and communication. Media-based activities also increase engagement, encourage critical reflection, and connect learning with real-life contexts. Additionally, media literacy supports innovative pedagogy and strengthens readiness to work with digitally oriented learners.
