Abstract

Environmental concern over organofluorine compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has increased in recent years. PFAS comprise both non-polymeric and polymeric species, some of which-particularly polymeric PFAS-remain industrially important. Alongside growing awareness of the adverse environmental impacts of non-polymeric PFAS, such as perfluorocarboxylic acids and perfluoroalkanesulfonic acids, which are toxic, mobile, bioaccumulative, and capable of crossing biological membranes, the development of destruction technologies for both non-polymeric and polymeric PFAS that convert these compounds into harmless fluoride ions (i.e., mineralization) has expanded significantly. In addition, upcycling processes to high-value chemicals have also begun to emerge. In this review, we focus on advances in decomposition technologies for these compounds reported over the past two decades, highlighting recent progress to stimulate further research in this field.

Remediation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)- Contaminated Environments: Emerging Nanomaterials, Electrochemical, and Biological Strategies

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of synthetic chemicals widely used for their hydrophobic and lipophobic properties in industrial and consumer products. However, their extreme persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity have led to significant environmental and human health concerns. Conventi...

Unlocking the Catalytic Potential of PFAS: Upcycling Forever Chemicals Into Effective Catalysts.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging global pollutants that threaten aquatic environments and human health. Here, we propose a novel paradigm converting PFAS-containing wastewater into efficient catalysts, unlocking the catalytic potential of these "forever chemicals". As the first example of this pa...

Effects of Biochar on PFAS Destruction by Advanced Reduction Process

The widespread occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources poses significant risks to human health and the environment. PFAS are highly persistent due to exceptional strength and stability of the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds present in their chemical structure, allowing them to remain in...

Emerging PFAS: Current Concerns, Remediation, and Future Perspectives

Emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute the most currently available PFAS used across many applications, such as aqueous film-forming foam, textiles, food contact materials, chromium plating, semiconductor production, and fluoropolymer producing aids. Since the Stockholm convention, legacy PFAS h...
