Designing for semiotic alignment: integrating Gallwey’s Inner Game and edusemiotics in technology-enhanced formative assessment in EMI higher education

Abstract

This study examines how student engagement in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) higher education is shaped by the interaction between technology-enhanced formative assessment, multimodal meaning-making, and learners' internal dialogue. Drawing on edusemiotics and Gallwey's Inner Game theory, the study proposes semiotic alignment as a conceptual lens for understanding how evaluative and intuitive sign systems influence participation. The purpose is not to test a predictive model, but to explore how digital feedback practices may recalibrate the symbolic conditions for engagement in linguistically demanding EMI contexts. An exploratory qualitative multiple case study design was adopted. Data were collected from four undergraduate EMI courses at a Taiwanese university using technology-enhanced formative assessment tools, including Microsoft Forms, Microsoft OneNote, and a CEFR-aligned mobile English test. Three contrasting student cases from engineering, medicine, and design were selected through maximum variation sampling. Data sources included interviews, weekly reflective prompts, digital artifacts, and an interaction frequency index. Thematic analysis combined deductive coding informed by edusemiotics and Inner Game theory with inductive pattern identification. Findings show that students' engagement was mediated by how digital tools functioned symbolically within the classroom. When feedback practices emphasized evaluation, accuracy, and exposure, students experienced semiotic resistance manifested, as silence, perfectionism, or modality mismatch. When tools supported anonymity, multimodal expression, and dialogic feedback, students demonstrated increased participation, symbolic risk-taking, and interpretive agency. Across cases, semiotic alignment emerged when classroom sign systems reduced Self 1 interference and enabled intuitive Self 2 engagement. The study proposes semiotic alignment as a tentative framework for understanding technology-mediated engagement in EMI. This study is exploratory and based on a small number of qualitative cases from a single institutional context, which limits generalisability. The findings do not establish causal relationships between technology use and learning outcomes. Instead, the study contributes conceptually by introducing semiotic alignment as an analytic lens for examining technology-mediated engagement. Future research should test and refine this framework across larger samples, diverse institutional settings, and longitudinal designs, and explore how semiotic alignment relates to measurable indicators of participation, affect, and learning performance in technology-enhanced higher education. The findings suggest that digital learning technologies function not only as instructional tools but also as symbolic resources shaping learner engagement. Educators designing technology-enhanced formative assessment should attend to how feedback formats, anonymity, and multimodal affordances influence students' internal dialogue. Practical strategies include using low-stakes digital reflections, multimodal submission options, and dialogic feedback routines to reduce evaluative pressure and support learner agency. These design considerations may help instructors foster more inclusive and supportive digital learning environments in EMI and other linguistically demanding contexts. As higher education becomes increasingly digital and internationalised, students face intensified linguistic, evaluative, and affective pressures. This study highlights how technology-enhanced assessment practices can either reinforce or mitigate these pressures through their symbolic meanings. By foregrounding semiotic alignment, the research points to the importance of designing digital learning environments that promote trust, participation, and interpretive agency. Such environments may contribute to more equitable access to learning opportunities for students operating in additional languages or in culturally unfamiliar academic contexts. This study offers an original conceptual contribution by integrating edusemiotics and Inner Game theory to examine technology-enhanced learning in higher education. Rather than focusing on tool effectiveness, it introduces semiotic alignment as a lens for analysing how digital formative assessment mediates learners' internal dialogue, engagement, and meaning-making. The value of the study lies in its theoretical synthesis and empirically grounded illustrations, which extend current understandings of information and learning technologies beyond functional use to their symbolic and affective dimensions. The framework provides a foundation for future research and design-oriented inquiry.

Digital Creativity in Special Education: A Phenomenological Study of SPED Teachers' Use of Canva

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Special Education (SPED) teachers using Canva as a digital creativity tool for designing instructional materials and supporting inclusive education for learners with disabilities. The study was conducted at Queens Row Elementary School, Bacoor City, Cavite, Philippines, during the 2025-2026 school year, with data collection beginning on February 12, 2026. Five public elementary SPED teachers were purposively selected based on their current SPED teaching assignment, at least one year of teaching experience, actual use of Canva in preparing instructional materials, and willingness to participate. Data were generated using a phenomenological interview guide through a focus group discussion and individual semi-structured interviews. Audio- and video-recorded data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological method; member checking and reflexive documentation were used to support credibility and interpretive discipline. Participants perceived Canva as a practical and learner-centred design tool that helped them prepare clearer, more adaptable, and visually accessible materials while supporting differentiated instruction, collaboration, preparation efficiency, and professional confidence. Four cross-participant themes emerged: Accessible Canva Design, Multimodal Learner Engagement, Teacher Creative Empowerment, and Learner-Centered Restraint. The findings indicate how these five teachers understood and used Canva in their local SPED context; they do not establish causal effects on learner outcomes. The study recommends continued teacher training and technical support, careful attention to accessible and non-overwhelming design, and further multisite research incorporating classroom observation and direct learner-level evidence.

Inclusive Design Elements in a Digital Storytelling Prototype for Dyslexic Children: A Thematic Analysis

This study explores expert perspectives on the essential elements of a digital storytelling (DST) prototype designed to support early literacy among children with dyslexia. It aims to inform DST designers and educators in developing relevant content and potential design and implementation strategies for inclusive literacy learning. A qualitative design was employed using the Delphi method, involving iterative semi-structured interviews with seven subject-matter experts from special education, instructional technology, and multimedia fields. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis framework to generate themes systematically and ensure interpretive rigour. The findings revealed six interrelated themes emphasizing learner engagement, accessibility, pedagogical structure, content relevance, multimedia design, and teacher support. These themes indicate that experts indicated that future DST prototypes should combine clear instructional sequencing, dyslexia-friendly interface features, meaningful story content, and practical guidance for educators. The study highlights the need to integrate pedagogical, technological, and contextual considerations to enhance literacy development and engagement among dyslexic children. Overall, the study offers an empirically grounded framework for future DST development and promotes sustainable, equitable literacy interventions within inclusive educational settings.

Interaction and feedback on digital platforms for English speaking practice in higher education: an integrative review

It is concluded that pedagogical value depended less on the isolated tool than on task design and the formative use of feedback, and hybrid sequences showed the most consistent pattern by combining individual rehearsal, teacher mediation, and peer interaction.

TikTok as a constructivist platform for ethically and algorithmically literate TESL in the industrial era 5.0

This research places the integration of TikTok in teaching English as a second language (TESL) as a directed pedagogic design that combines constructivist engagement, digital ethics, and algorithmic literacy in the context of the industrial era 5.0. This study aims to: i) examine the influence of constructivist engagement on speaking fluency; ii) assess the effectiveness of digital ethics rubrics; and iii) test the mediating role of algorithmic literacy. Using a sequential mixed method, the study involved 130 participants (120 students, 10 lecturers) in a 12-week intervention that included ethics orientation and algorithmic literacy, task modeling, micro-speaking video production, rubric-based peer-lecturer feedback, and reflection and revision. Quantitative data were analyzed by regression, paired t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and mediation analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically and integrated through joint displays. Results showed that constructivist involvement had a significant effect on speaking fluency (β=0.68; R²=0.46; p<0.001), the digital ethics rubric significantly increased the ethics score (2.78→4.58; d=1.72), and algorithmic literacy mediated the relationship partially (38% effect). The findings confirm TikTok is effective for TESL when controlled by task design, ethics rubrics, and algorithmic literacy training.

Technology-Mediated Assessment in Blended EFL Courses: A Qualitative Interview Study of Students’ Experiences

This qualitative interview study explored EFL students’ lived experiences of using EnglishCentral, a video-based platform, as part of a high-stakes assessment system in a Turkish university preparatory program. Six students in an intensive English program participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted in Turkish. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis within Bachman and Palmer’s (1996) test usefulness framework. Three interrelated themes emerged from the data analysis. First, students reported perceived gains, mainly in terms of vocabulary, listening, and exposure to different English accents. Second, engagement was driven largely by assessment demands: students used the platform primarily to secure Language Portfolio (LP) points and reduce the risk of failure, often prioritizing task completion over learning. Third, students described the tool’s effectiveness as conditional, citing misalignment with institutional exams, opportunities to “game” automated scoring, and concerns regarding fairness, validity, and accountability. Overall, the findings suggest that, in this context, students’ perceived value of EnglishCentral was shaped less by the blended assessment tools or the platform alone than by how it was positioned within the LP grading system, aligned with course and exam outcomes, and guided by the teachers. This study recommends transparent scoring practices, moderate grade weighting, and active teacher guidance to support meaningful engagement with technology-mediated assessment in EFL contexts.
