Renewable-capacity planning can overstate decarbonization in a supply-constrained system because new clean generation may initially restore unmet electricity service rather than displace fossil output. This study develops a public-evidence-constrained, service-first planning framework for Iraq. Photovoltaic (PV), wind, and battery energy storage system (BESS) capacities are optimized within fixed multi-sector service trajectories and revalidated on all 8,784 hours of a reconstructed 2024 chronology for the 15-governorate federal-Iraq study area (Federal15). The central modeled 2050 state contains 34.745 GW PV, 8.314 GW wind, and 37.323 GW / 149.292 GWh BESS. Annual energy not served (ENS) is about 0.095%, but 66 shortage hours remain and peak hourly ENS reaches 13.115 GW. Only 4 of 19 non-base fixed-path stresses satisfy every annual ENS limit without re-optimization; importantly, the smallest failing exceedance is only 0.00098 percentage points, whereas severe cases exceed a limit by more than 2 percentage points. Re-optimizing the 2050 case with 2–8 h batteries keeps required storage energy near 149–154 GWh while substantially changing battery power, demonstrating that the four-hour case is an architecture assumption rather than an independently inferred optimal duration. The results are conditional planning diagnostics, not forecasts of Iraq’s eventual build-out.
Island power systems must decarbonize without the flexibility that an interconnection provides. The Canary Islands have advanced their decarbonization target to 2040, yet Tenerife still generates about 80% of its electricity from oil, and the route to the target remains unresolved. This work addresses a specific techni...

Rapid expansion of urban rail systems in emerging economies is driving substantial increases in electricity demand, raising challenges for long-term decarbonization. This study examines decarbonization pathways for the Jakarta Metro through a combination of rooftop solar photovoltaics (PV), energy efficiency measures (...

High renewable-energy shares do not, by themselves, guarantee that renewable electricity can be absorbed, shifted, and delivered through a constrained network. This study uses openTEPES for a deterministic 8736 h assessment of Tunisia’s 2035 power system, represented by 47 domestic nodes. It compares matched cases with...
Accelerating variable renewable energy integration introduces substantial operational challenges to modern power grids. Frequent curtailment of surplus renewable generation highlights the pressing need for long-duration energy storage capable of shifting generation to high-demand periods while providing essential ancil...

Power systems with rising shares of variable renewable energy require dispatchable flexibility, but the economic sustainability of gas-fired generation is increasingly shaped by LNG exposure, fuel-price volatility, declining utilization, and incomplete remuneration for system services. This study develops an integrated...

Although Tunisia has a large potential for renewable energy, it is still heavily reliant on traditional biomass and fossil fuels, with each resident consuming only 0.5 MWh of electricity annually. This low level of consumption highlights the need for a long-term electrification strategy that would enable a more sig...
