Aerospace Structures Explained: Materials, Design & Structural Engineering Systems

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This academic curriculum module delivers an analytical, physical, and computational treatment of aerospace structures, thin-walled semimonocoque mechanics, and airframe structural integrity across atmospheric and space environments. Key Technical Topics & Curricular Areas Covered:1. Semimonocoque Structural Mechanics: Flexural normal stress distributions via Navier-Bernoulli boom idealizations, shear flow in thin-walled multicell torque boxes, and Wagner tension-field post-buckling beam behavior.2. Airworthiness & Safety Metrics: Formal mathematical evaluation of Limit Load (LL), Ultimate Load (UL = 1.5 x LL), and Margin of Safety (MS) criteria under FAR Part 25 / CS-25 certification standards.3. Fatigue & Damage Tolerance: Safe-life versus fail-safe philosophies, linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), crack growth thresholds (Delta K_th), and cumulative fatigue damage assessment via Miner's Rule.4. AI-Era Computational Paradigms: Mesh-free Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) solving Kirchhoff-Love fourth-order biharmonic thin-plate equilibrium equations, real-time Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical telemetry fused with 1D Convolutional Neural Networks, and generative topology optimization for additive manufacturing.5. Multi-Domain Systems Engineering: Primary and secondary airframes, pressurized fuselage hoop-stress sizing, spacecraft central thrust cylinders, Whipple debris shields, hypersonic hot-structures (CMCs), and inflatable expandable orbital habitats.6. Pedagogical Features: An interactive wing spar flexure and Margin of Safety simulator case study, multi-tier conceptual review questions, and step-by-step calculated numerical engineering problems with explicit physical units. Format: Open Educational Resource (OER) prepared for long-term archiving on Zenodo and persistent indexing in MERLOT.
