A Concrete Vision of the MMO Research Platform: A Knowledge-Generation Space Built around Research Islands, Discoverers, and a Permanent Conference
Abstract
This paper builds on the preceding paper, "MMO Research Platform: A Concept for a Knowledge-Generation Space through Anonymous Collaboration and LLM Moderation," and develops its concrete spatial design, modes of participation, role structure, and operating principles. The previous paper identified a problem in modern research: completed papers and finished outputs are disproportionately visible, while much of the knowledge-generation process - including question formation, branching hypotheses, refutation, verification, failure, organization, and paper writing - remains difficult to see. It therefore proposed the "MMO Research Platform," which treats research as a persistent, multiplayer knowledge world. The present paper makes that proposal more concrete by treating research themes as "islands," participants as occupying diverse "roles," and the research process as a space resembling a "permanent conference." Particular emphasis is placed on institutionally recognizing roles that are often difficult to see in existing research systems, including discoverers, organizers, refuters, explainers, and observers. The paper also introduces pseudonymous identities that retain histories and contribution records, seeking to avoid both the authority bias of established academia and the irresponsibility of anonymous message boards, and thereby suggesting the possibility of "pseudonymous intellectual debate with history and contribution." It further discusses a UI model that combines a forum-like core layer with a VRChat-like spatial layer, a design in which disputes between islands function as guild-battle-like intellectual competition, an implementation process that moves gradually from a closed beta toward broader access, and incentive design aimed at creating a world in which people want to participate in research. The paper positions the MMO Research Platform not merely as a research-support tool, but as intellectual infrastructure for revitalizing scientific curiosity, responding to low-quality mass production in the generative-AI era, and forming an ecosystem for large-scale intellectual inquiry, including AGI development.
