Abstract Skilled human work reveals a fertile domain of pre-reflective, skillful action that eludes traditional rationalistic models of human agency. Martin Heidegger describes this domain as people’s everyday “dealings” with “ready-to-hand” equipment. This chapter argues that the phenomenological tradition, rooted in Heidegger’s ontology of the carpenter’s workshop, provides a vital framework for understanding the nature and significance of work in the modern age. By tracing the evolution of “skillful coping” through the Dreyfus Skill Model and examining Terry Winograd and Fernando Flores’s “conversational ontology,” the analysis reveals work as a structured nexus of social communication rather than a set of isolated cognitive tasks. As generative AI reshapes the professional landscape, this phenomenological perspective offers a critical lens for assessing the impact of technology on human flourishing. It asserts that navigating the future of the workplace requires a deep recovery of the intrinsically social and skillful nature of human “being-in-the-world.”
The method, ECCOLA, is presented, which aims at making the high-level AI ethics principles more practical, making it possible for developers to more easily implement them in practice.
