Abstract
During the New England shelf break acoustics (NESBA) experiment in May 2021, an acoustic autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was deployed to investigate bathymetric scattering processes at the shelfbreak. The AUV, consisting of a modified REMUS 600 vehicle with an onboard 2.5–4.5 kHz transducer and towed hydrophone array, passed over a submarine landslide site characterized by a steep escarpment and rocky debris field. AUV source signals received on nearby mooring hydrophones showed a complex interference pattern of overlapping bottom returns caused by this intricate bathymetry. A series of computational propagation models were tested to understand the bottom return data and scattering physics of this site. Ray tracing as well as 2-D and 3-D broadband parabolic equation (PE) models were used to simulate acoustic arrivals, which were then compared to the data for validation. While all models reproduced the primary features observed in the data, features attributed to out-of-plane 3-D scattering effects were best reproduced with the 3-D broadband PE model. On 25 August 2024 (08:51 local time), a bright fireball was observed across the southwestern coastal region of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and was linked to a confirmed meteorite fall near Nqweba. The meteoroid, estimated by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) to be ~1 m in diameter with...

This article describes an ocean-bottom seismic data set collected offshore New Zealand’s North Island as part of a multinational amphibious experiment investigating the Auckland volcanic field. From August 2023 to September 2024, 20 broadband ocean-bottom seismographs were deployed at water depths of 1200–2700 m, yie...

The search and discovery of underwater shipwreck sites represent the most arduous and critical phases of underwater archaeology. Wooden shipwrecks, in particular, are characterized by low acoustic impedance contrast and weak magnetic anomalies, coupled with their limited physical dimensions. Consequently, they predomin...
Underwater acoustic vector sensors (AVSs) are widely used for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in underwater surveillance and marine bioacoustics applications. Compared with conventional hydrophone arrays, a single compact AVS offers greater flexibility and simpler deployment while enabling DOA estimation using th...

The ocean sound speed profile (SSP) governs underwater acoustic propagation but remains difficult to observe continuously along a moving survey track using direct profiling instruments. This paper investigates differential acoustic propagation delays as remote observations that integrate propagation information along t...
