Abstract
Continuous-time attitude estimation methods are becoming increasingly popular because they can be evaluated at any query time and offer many other advantages by expressing the attitude as a continuous function of time. Consequently, the representation of the continuous-time attitude trajectory becomes a critical issue. This article introduces an attitude representation method using Chebyshev polynomials defined directly on the unit quaternion manifold. The attitude trajectory is parameterized as a cumulative product of exponential-map rotational components using Lie algebra coefficients of increasing frequency. This on-manifold formulation inherently guarantees unit-norm consistency and avoids the singularities associated with minimal three-parameter representations. A recursive strategy is adapted to derive the trajectory’s time derivatives (angular velocity) and its Jacobians with respect to the coefficients, including extensions for navigation frame kinematics considering Earth’s rotation. The representation is applied within a polynomial optimization framework for batch or window-based attitude estimation. Comprehensive simulations and experiments evaluate the method in the inertial-magnetic attitude estimation scenario. Results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits superior convergence and robustness compared to the standard multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter and achieves superior or comparable accuracy while offering substantial improvements in computational efficiency over other polynomial optimization methods.
The nonlinear nature of quadrotor dynamics requires high-fidelity reconstruction of vehicle position and attitude. In order to mitigate singularities associated with global three-parameter representations—such as Euler angles—the quadrotor attitude is conventionally parameterized via unit quaternions and reconstructed...

We propose a continuous-time algorithm for zeroth-order global optimization of smooth functions on compact manifolds that synthesizes Riemannian gradient dynamics using only objective measurements, without evaluating gradients. The algorithm is formulated as an ordinary differential equation driven by piecewise-smooth...

Quadrotor racing demands aggressive attitude and progress control while passing through every gate, and conventional quadrotor MPCC formulations state the prediction model in inertial coordinates and the attitude error in the body frame. We present a Dual-Quaternion Model Predictive Contouring Control (DQ-MPCC) for qua...

Batch attitude smoothing is important for reconstructing uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectories from high-rate sensor measurements, especially when uncertainty information is available in the form of predefined bounds rather than Gaussian covariance models. This article formulates attitude smoothing on $\mathbb {SO...

We present an attitude-only framework for estimating a spacecraft's normalized inertia tensor from torque-free rotational motion. Our method supports both continuous single-arc observations and the joint use of multiple short torque-free arcs, while requiring neither gyroscope measurements nor known control torques. A...
