The remedy is not to delegate the details to AI specialists but to develop AI literacy in leaders themselves, the difference between an organization that governs its AI and one that is unknowingly governed by it.
Abstract
As leaders increasingly rely on AI to make decisions and shape their reasoning, a risk emerges that their judgment is gradually replaced by AI output without their awareness, even while they remain accountable for the outcome. I refer to this challenge as
abdication to AI
and argue that it emerges from combining the convincing prose of generative AI with the well-established practice of delegating expertise, itself a vital leadership competency. As leader judgment is gradually supplanted by AI “reasoning” throughout an organization, eventually no human reasoning remains. Because these changes are small and accumulate invisibly, they cannot be easily verified by either leaders or technical staff, creating organizational change without a clear owner. The remedy is not to delegate the details to AI specialists but to develop AI literacy in leaders themselves, the difference between an organization that governs its AI and one that is unknowingly governed by it.
The method, ECCOLA, is presented, which aims at making the high-level AI ethics principles more practical, making it possible for developers to more easily implement them in practice.
