Genetically Modified and Gene-Edited Organisms—Objectives, Public Perception and Applications
Simple Summary The debate about the acceptance or rejection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has lasted for many decades. At the heart of this debate is the balance between the potential benefits of GMOs and concerns about their possible effects on human health, the environment, animal welfare and society. Over the years, several plants, animals and raw materials have been produced by GMOs for pharmaceutical, medical, industrial and agricultural purposes. Some of them became accepted and introduced into daily practice, while others were refused, especially those for human alimentation. Recently, however, since the invention of new-generation gene editing methods, there is a need to reconsider and redefine the term GMO as well as the acceptance of products created in this way.
