Hypothalamic Cell Type Evolution across Vertebrates

The hypothalamus regulates vital functions and is highly conserved among vertebrates occupying diverse niches, but little is known about the evolution of its cell types. Using comparative single-cell transcriptomics across major vertebrate classes, we identified deeply conserved and clade-specific cell types. While hom...

Flexible use of conserved motifs constrains genome access in cell type evolution

This work proposes a 'collective maintenance' model in which motif vocabularies defining cell type families are evolutionarily stable, while recombination of these motifs generates cell type-specific regulatory programmes.
