Being digital from digital transformation to the agentic enterprise : a journey through data, artificial intelligence, and the future of organizations

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

Being Digital: From Digital Transformation to the Agentic EnterpriseA journey through data, artificial intelligence, and the future of organizations Over the past three years, one question has run through every conversation about technology and business: what does it actually mean to be digital? The answer keeps changing. Being digital once meant having an online presence; it then came to mean integrated data, personalized experiences, and connected channels. With generative AI and the rise of autonomous agents, the question has shifted again—from how to digitize processes to which decisions can be delegated to machines, and how to govern the resulting autonomy. Drawing on a rereading of 73 articles from the Being Digital newsletter, this book reorganizes that thinking into a single arc: from the foundations of digital transformation to the architecture of the agentic enterprise. Its central thesis is that technology is not the destination of transformation. Rather, it expands an organization's capacity to represent its reality, interpret signals, choose actions, and learn from outcomes. Digital maturity is therefore measured not by the number of platforms or AI models deployed, but by the quality of the decisions a company can make, the speed at which it learns, and the responsibility with which it distributes authority between people and systems. Across nine chapters, the book moves from the foundations of digital business, data, and customer experience, through the evolution of artificial intelligence from prediction to generation and its applied use across marketing, operations, and finance, to AI agents, responsible-AI governance, and a proposed architecture for decision-making under uncertainty (RIOG). It closes with a vision of the agentic enterprise as an adaptive, composable organization in which human work becomes the design of limits and governance operates through policy rather than manual queues. Written for executives, technology leaders, and practitioners navigating the transition from AI experimentation to real business value, it balances foundational concepts with a practical guide to adoption, trust, and impact—keeping people at the center throughout.
