Positive Parenting and its Relationship to Friendship Quality among Adolescents in Amman

Jul 2026 · Jordanian Educational Journal · Vol 11, pp. 392-415 · 0 citations · 24 references

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the level of positive parenting as perceived by a sample of adolescents in Amman and to explore the relationship between positive parenting and friendship quality, including gender-based differences. The sample consisted of 496 males and females adolescents from the University educational District. To achieve the study objectives, the Positive Parenting Scale (Abu Awad, 2019) and the Friendship Quality Scale (Thien et al., 2012) were used. The results indicated a high level of positive parenting. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between positive parenting and friendship quality. This relationship was stronger among males than females, possibly due to developmental and social differences during adolescence. Also, the findings revealed that positive parenting practices, particularly structure, guidance, and support, were associated with higher-quality friendships. These results underscore the importance of a supportive family environment in promoting healthy adolescent friendships and call for gender-sensitive interventions.
