Reusing Spare Vehicle Computing Capacity: Is It Viable, Profitable and Sustainable?

Sep 2026 · Code Ocean

Abstract

Simulator and reproduction scripts for the paper of the same title. The capsule regenerates every figure and table of the paper and of its supplementary material from the raw output of the simulation campaign, which is downloaded on run. Vehicular Cloud Computing is evaluated on SUMO traces of downtown Rome under three questions: whether the spare on-board capacity of vehicles can serve offloaded tasks within their deadlines, whether doing so pays for the network operator and the vehicle owners, and what it costs in life-cycle CO2 emissions compared with an edge server. The code implements a two-stage scheme (deadline-constrained ILP allocation on nominal beacon estimates, ex-post coalitional revenue sharing on realized outcomes), an M/G/1 queueing model of every executor, and a robust admission rule priced on the gap between declared and delivered capacity.

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
