This work describes the rapid deployment of GenAI in newsrooms and its impact on newsgathering, newsroom research, news production, and news distribution, along with a series of research questions and hypotheses for how AI will influence first, second, and third level agenda-setting.
Abstract
With GenAI transforming newsrooms at warp speed, it is imperative to consider its implications for foundational gatekeeping and resultant agenda-setting. We offer a new framework with which to view these issues, describing the rapid deployment of GenAI in newsrooms and its impact on newsgathering, newsroom research, news production, and news distribution. With these gatekeeping issues laid out, we follow up by offering a series of research questions and hypotheses for how AI will influence first, second, and third level agenda-setting, along with troubling normative implications on the horizon.
The method, ECCOLA, is presented, which aims at making the high-level AI ethics principles more practical, making it possible for developers to more easily implement them in practice.

AI is making software generation faster, but speed does not remove the need for expertise. As more work is delegated to AI, tacit knowledge may become one of the most important human advantages in software engineering.
