Lean Management Practices and their Impact on Operational Excellence and Employee Productivity in the Banking Sector: A Literature Review

Jul 2026 · International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology · 0 citations

Abstract

Banks face constant pressure to process transactions accurately, satisfy regulators, and meet rising customer expectations, often without proportional increases in staff. Lean Management Practices (LMP), developed originally on the manufacturing floor, have been widely proposed as a response to this pressure. This paper reviews the literature connecting eight Lean tools, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Standard Operating Procedures, Kaizen, Poka-Yoke, Visual Management, Root Cause Analysis, and Kanban, to two outcomes central to service organizations: operational excellence and employee productivity. Drawing on foundational work from the Toyota Production System through recent studies of Lean adoption in Indian banks, the review summarizes how each tool is reported to reduce waste, improve consistency, and free employee time for higher-value work. The paper closes by identifying gaps in the existing evidence base, particularly the scarcity of multi-tool, quantitative, and India-specific studies that examine operational and employee outcomes together.
