After the Erosion of Symbolic Scarcity: A Political Economy of Aesthetic Symbols, Relational Anchoring, and Existential Encounter

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding the supply of aesthetically sophisticated images, prose, styles, atmospheres, and other symbolic forms. This development does not eliminate scarcity from aesthetic and cultural life, but it raises a political-economic question concerning where scarcity, differentiation, and value formation may become concentrated when the production of many aesthetic representations becomes increasingly accessible. This paper examines the hypothesis that, under conditions of AI-mediated symbolic abundance, some forms of aesthetic value may become more dependent upon the relational, historical, material, spatial, and institutional conditions to which symbols can be credibly anchored. The paper develops the concept of relational anchoring to examine how reproducible aesthetic symbols can be coupled with less readily substitutable histories, places, forms of provenance, craft traditions, cultural memories, institutions, and situated encounters. Particular attention is given to three interrelated dimensions of this process: contingency, beauty, and existential encounter. Contingency concerns the partially indeterminate encounters through which significance can emerge within historically constituted subjects. Beauty concerns the aesthetic salience through which some encounters become affectively differentiated. Existential encounter refers more narrowly to situations in which an experience contributes to an intensified awareness of presence, situatedness, temporality, or being alive. Capital need not determine such experiences directly in order to organize access to some of their generative conditions or to alter the landscapes in which they become more or less probable. Drawing on philosophical resources from aesthetics, phenomenology, existential thought, and theories of contingency, together with political-economic literatures on symbolic value, cultural capital, luxury, experience, authentication, and commercialization, the paper develops a conceptual account of changing scarcity conditions. Publicly observable practices in commercial, artistic, and luxury spaces are used as comparative cases rather than as evidence of a common corporate intention. The analysis asks whether established practices of cultural exhibition, heritage narration, public art, craft authentication, and experiential design can acquire different historical functions when aesthetic representation itself becomes less scarce. It also considers a recursive possibility: commercial coupling with culture can support circulation, preservation, and renewed encounter, while sufficiently extensive repetition may also contribute to symbolic saturation and declining affective salience. The paper therefore treats symbolic abundance, relational anchoring, cultural regeneration, value capture, and symbolic exhaustion as analytically distinct possibilities within an emerging political economy of the conditions of encounter.
