Abstract
Background
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly influencing nursing practice and education, yet a gap remains between technological advances and clinical nurses' competencies. Research from nurses' perspectives that systematically differentiates and prioritizes GenAI learning needs remains limited.
Objective
To investigate clinical nurses' current use of GenAI and their learning attitudes, and to categorize and prioritize their learning needs using the Kano model.
Methods
A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1219 clinical nurses in a tertiary hospital in China. Eighteen GenAI-related learning needs were classified using the Kano model. Better-Worse coefficients were calculated and visualized in a quadrant plot. The Average Satisfaction Coefficient (ASC) was further used to rank attributes within each quadrant.
Results
Most participants reported prior use of GenAI (87.69%) and positive attitudes (97.10%), while only 7.39% had received formal training. Six learning needs were identified as one-dimensional attributes, primarily related to practical applications such as teaching material development and patient education. One attribute (personalized nursing education) was classified as attractive. Eleven items, including foundational knowledge, ethics, and advanced clinical applications, were classified as indifferent. Within this category, usage standards, nursing rounds, and multidisciplinary case discussions showed relatively higher ASC values.
Conclusion
Nurses' GenAI learning needs are currently oriented toward practical, application-focused skills. Curriculum development may benefit from a phased approach that prioritizes high-impact practical skills while progressively incorporating foundational, ethical, and advanced competencies. Ethics should be included as a core component. Educator preparedness and pedagogical leadership are important for effective integration of GenAI into nursing education.
Thematic analysis revealed that various factors underpinning their attitudinal, normative, and control beliefs are critical determinants of nurses' and students' overall experiences with GenAI and their intentions to use GenAI technologies.

Initial evidence is provided that the NAIRS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing nursing students' readiness for artificial intelligence across knowledge/awareness, willingness to use AI, self-efficacy, and ethical awareness domains and may be useful for educational needs assessment and curriculum planning in nursing education.

The weak negative correlation between knowledge and attitudes suggests that greater awareness of AI may be accompanied by increased concerns regarding its use, and further educational initiatives are needed to enhance nurses’ preparedness for AI integration in clinical practice.

Introduction: The integration of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) into nursing education faces challenges in linking theory to clinical application in complex family health contexts. Students struggle with efficiently accessing, appraising, and applying evidence influenced by sociocultural factors. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential but requires pedagogical design to foster critical thinking and ethical use beyond technical skills.Method: An action research with mixed methods was conducted with 100 nursing students. The intervention had four phases: participatory family diagnosis, AI-assisted evidence retrieval and validation, community educational workshops design and execution, and multi-level evaluation.Results: A significant shift in AI use from basic to strategic, with a 40% reduction in literature search time. Qualitative data revealed enhanced critical awareness and ethical reasoning, while quantitative results indicated 90% of students improved critical appraisal skills and 70% felt more confident in evidence-based decisions. The project impacted 100 families, with 90% trusting evidence-based recommendations.Conclusions: Integrating AI in experiential pedagogies like Design Thinking and Service-Learning effectively develops nursing competencies, ensuring technology adoption supports context-sensitive family health learning outcomes.
