English Language Testing and Assessment in the AI Era: Research Guidelines for School-Based Mixed-Methods Studies

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This research guide is for the course Current Issues in English Language Education. It focuses on English language testing and assessment in the AI era. Students work in small research teams. Each team has two students and one lecturer. All teams use one shared questionnaire, but each team has a different research topic and different interview participants. The study uses a mixed-methods design by combining questionnaire data and interview data. The guide offers three main topics: fairness in AI-assisted English writing assessment, learner authorship and validity, and authentic and AI-aware English assessment. The research is conducted in junior or senior secondary schools, including public, private, Islamic, and non-Islamic schools. The guide also provides research questions, questionnaire items, interview questions, a research timeline, data analysis guidance, ethical notes, and publication milestones. Students must submit their manuscript at Meeting 12. At Meeting 16, they defend their research and explain the editor and reviewer process.
