The Green Horizon Academy: An International Blueprint for the World's First Net-Zero University of Climate Mitigation and Applied Sustainability

Abstract

South Asia faces interconnected challenges arising from climate change, ecological degradation, water insecurity, food-system vulnerability, and marine plastic pollution. These challenges require not only scientific knowledge and policy development but also practical expertise capable of translating climate solutions into effective, community-level action. The Green Horizon Academy is proposed as an independent, international, net-zero educational ecosystem designed to address this implementation gap through interdisciplinary education, applied research, and real-world climate innovation. The Academy will integrate climate engineering, renewable energy and smart-grid systems, climate finance and carbon markets, environmental law, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable food systems within a living-laboratory campus. Its educational model emphasizes hands-on learning through campus-based renewable energy systems, carbon accounting and trading simulations, regenerative agriculture, water and waste management, and ecological restoration initiatives. The proposed framework aims to develop a new generation of climate professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and policy practitioners equipped to address regional and global environmental challenges. By integrating education, research, technology development, industrial collaboration, and community engagement, the Academy seeks to strengthen climate resilience, accelerate the transition toward low-carbon development, and support sustainable livelihoods across vulnerable regions. The initiative ultimately envisions an education model in which sustainability is demonstrated through institutional practice while students actively participate in designing, operating, and continuously improving climate-resilient systems.
