Digital Transformation in Industry

Abstract

In this era of climate change and global environmental challenges, the role of sustainability in the latest industrial revolution, Industry 5.0, is becoming increasingly relevant. The changing trends of Industry 5.0 represent an era of human–machine collaboration and sustainable AI in manufacturing, built on the connection between humans and machines. AI-based algorithms, from machine learning (ML) to deep learning techniques, help manufacturers and industrialists predict service demands and minimize downtime costs. Using AI technologies in industry can contribute to a more personalized, efficient, and innovative working environment. AI can sustain continued communication with machines and reduce operational risks. The purpose of this chapter is to present the importance of artificial intelligence in nurturing human–machine collaboration, green AI, and accountability. It also presents key trends in AI, including hyper-personalization. Green AI contributes to the development of energy-efficient and sustainable AI models. The chapter also discusses different types of accountability, including regulatory structures, explainability, and governance, to ensure that AI is used ethically in industry. Furthermore, the application of green AI principles and effective accountability measures can promote the development of AI while reducing its risks and environmental impacts. The chapter also identifies future trends and challenges in achieving a sustainable future through innovative practices that balance economic development and environmental stewardship. The future of industry lies in the symbiotic relationship between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, which together will drive innovation, productivity, and sustainable processes in the manufacturing sector.
