Domain-Specific Platform Engineering and Service Automation: Case Studies in Healthcare and Smart Enterprises

Abstract

Platform engineering and service automation have become pivotal paradigms to operate complex digital infrastructures across domain-specific areas. Although widely used, the current frameworks do not have domain-specific orchestration of the heterogeneous needs of healthcare and smart enterprise environments. This paper proposes a unified domain-specific platform engineering framework (DS-PEF) that integrates microservices-based service automation, policy-based orchestration, and AI-assisted workflow management. The proposed framework is evaluated through two structured case studies: a healthcare integration platform supporting automated clinical workflows and a smart enterprise automation system supporting DevSecOps pipelines and intelligent resource allocation. The experimental evaluation uses the MIMIC-IV healthcare dataset and a synthetic enterprise operations benchmark containing more than 50,000 service transactions. Findings indicate that DS-PEF achieves 94.7% workflow automation accuracy, reduces workflow latency by 38.4% compared with traditional platforms, reaches a 96.2% policy compliance rate, and improves resource utilization efficiency by 41.3%. The framework is better than the current platforms such as Backstage, Crossplane and Port both in terms of throughput and fault-tolerance. These results affirm that platform engineering that is domain specific can significantly improve operational intelligence, compliance enforcement and scalability in mission critical environments.
