Pattern of Thyroid Diseases Among Patients Undergoing Thyroidectomy: A Retrospective Study

Background: Thyroid disease is a common indication for surgery, and histopathology remains the definitive method for diagnosis. This study described the pattern of thyroid diseases. Methods: retrospective descriptive-analytical study was conducted in three main hospitals of Taiz City Al-Dakaf, Al-Gomhouri Teaching and Al-Safwa) covering January 2023 to December 2024. Records of 250 patients who underwent thyroidectomy Results: Females comprised 92.4% of patients, with a median age of 40 years. Multinodular goiter was the most frequent benign lesion (46.0%) while malignancy was identified in 39 patients (15.6%), papillary-patterned carcinoma accounted for 92.3% of malignant tumors. Hoarseness, weight loss, appetite loss, cervical lymphadenopathy, suspicious ultrasound and FNA findings, higher TI-RADS categories Conclusion: Approximately one in six thyroidectomy specimens was malignant. Clinical warning symptoms combined with ultrasound findings improved preoperative risk stratification and may support earlier diagnosis and appropriate surgical management in resource-limited settings.

Breast disorders in adolescence: Etiological, clinical, and therapeutic aspects.

Introduction. Breast diseases in adolescents are rare and generally benign, although their treatment can be complex. Objective. To describe the etiology, clinical presentation, and therapeutic management of adolescents with breast conditions at a tertiary care hospital. Population and methods. Retrospective case series study. The study included patients aged 10 to 18 years with suspected breast pathology who were treated between 2020 and 2024. Clinical and treatment data, as well as information on comorbidities, were collected. Results. A total of 127 patients were analyzed (median age: 16 years); 80 were female. In females, benign tumors predominated, primarily fibroadenomas, and 29 required surgery. In males, pubertal gynecomastia was the most common finding (n = 33), and secondary cases associated with hypogonadism or medication use were identified; 11 required surgery. Conclusion. Fibroadenomas were most common in girls, and gynecomastia in boys. The identification of secondary causes underscores the need for a comprehensive evaluation and targeted treatment.

Relationship between Clinical Examination, Ultrasonography, and Histopathological Findings in Breast Tumors

Breast cancer is a global health issue and one of the leading causes of death among women in Indonesia, accounting for approximately 65% of cases. Various factors, such as lifestyle, genetics, and delayed diagnosis, contribute to the high mortality rate. This study aims to analyze the application of triple diagnosis, which includes clinical examination, ultrasound, and histopathology in the diagnosis of breast tumors at Ibnu Sina Hospital in Makassar. This study used an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total sampling method was applied to all breast tumor patients who underwent clinical examination, ultrasonography, and histopathological examination during 2023–2024. Data were obtained from medical records and analyzed descriptively using frequencies and percentages. The association between clinical examination, ultrasonography, and histopathological findings was assessed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that most patients were young women and that benign tumors were more common than malignant tumors. Clinical examination and ultrasonography findings were predominantly benign. Histopathological examination showed that fibroadenoma mammae was the most common benign tumor, while invasive breast carcinoma of no special type was the most common malignant tumor. The Chi-square test showed a significant association between clinical examination, ultrasonography, and histopathological findings. These findings indicate diagnostic concordance among the three examination methods and support the role of integrated diagnostic assessment in assisting clinical decision-making for breast tumor management.

HISTOPATHOLOGICAL SPECTRUM OF BREAST LESIONS: A RETROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY

Background:Breast lesions encompass a wide spectrum of inflammatory, benign proliferative, fibroepithelial, borderline and malignant lesions and histopathology is still fundamental to definitive diagnosis. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of the histopathological spectrum of the breast samples received in a tertiary care path lab of three years. The age, sex, laterality, type of specimen, clinical presentation and final histopathological diagnosis were noted in the records of 286 breast specimens. The lesions were divided into non-neoplastic, benign neoplastic, borderline and malignant and the malignant ones were graded according to the modified Bloom-Richardson system.Results:The mean age was 38.7 +/-15.6 years, with a female predominance (98.6%). A total of 206 cases (72.0%) were benign lesions, 68 cases (23.8%) malignant lesions, 6 cases (2.1%) were borderline phyllodes tumors and 6 cases (2.1%) were inflammatory/non-neoplastic lesions. The commonest benign lesion was fibroadenoma (104/286, 36.4%) followed by fibrocystic change (42/286, 14.7%). Invasive carcinoma of no special type was the commonest malignancy (52/68, 76.5%). Age older than 40 years, skin/nipple changes and positivity of the axillary nodes were significantly associated with malignancy (p<0.001). The vast majority of invasive carcinomas were grade II (53.8%) and stage pT2 (48.1%). Conclusion:The study reveals that benign breast lesions outnumber non-benign lesions, but histopathology is essential for the diagnosis of malignant and borderline lesions which need to be treated definitively.
