Abstract

Objective: To analyze temporal trends in mortality from neurodegenerative diseases in Brazil, according to diagnostic categories of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), sociodemographic characteristics, place of death, and regional distribution from 2010 to 2024. Methods: This was a nationwide ecological time-series study using data from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS). Deaths whose underlying cause was classified between G10 and G37 of ICD-10 were included. Records with unknown sex were proportionally redistributed. Data were grouped into three five-year periods and analyzed by diagnostic category, sex, age group, race/skin color, education, marital status, place of death, and macro-region, using absolute and relative frequencies and percentage variation. Results: A total of 435,791 deaths from neurodegenerative diseases were recorded, with a 113.00% increase between 2010–2014 and 2020–2024. Alzheimer’s disease (G30) remained the leading cause, accounting for approximately 70% of deaths and increasing by 112.72%. Other degenerative diseases of the nervous system (G31) showed the greatest proportional increase (272.81%), while Parkinson’s disease (G20) remained the second most frequent category. Female predominance, increasing concentration among individuals aged 60 years or older, growth among Black and Brown populations, fewer missing records, hospital predominance, and rising home deaths were observed. Conclusion: Mortality increased markedly, reflecting population aging, diagnostic changes, and regional inequalities.

THE MARK OF ALCOHOL ON LIVER MORTALITY IN BRAZIL: PROFILE OF DECEDENTS AND REGIONAL INEQUALITIES, 2010–2024

ABSTRACT: Objective: To analyze trends and the sociodemographic and territorial profile of mortality from alcohol-associated liver disease in Brazil between 2010 and 2024. Methods: Ecological descriptive study of deaths whose underlying cause was classified under ICD-10 category K70, obtained from the Mortality Information System and grouped into three five-year periods. Sex, age, race/skin color, schooling, marital status, place of death, macroregion, and state were examined using absolute numbers, proportions, and percentage changes. Results: A total of 158,428 deaths were recorded. The number remained stable between 2010–2014 and 2015–2019 (-0.03%) and rose by 7.51% in 2020–2024, reaching 55,382 deaths. Men accounted for 88.25% of deaths in the last period. An age shift was observed, with a 21.14% decline among those aged 30–39 years and a 40.16% increase among people aged 60 years or older. The share of people classified as Brown increased from 41.54% to 48.77%; deaths rose by 17.09% in the Northeast and 25.14% in the Central-West, while declining by 3.35% in the Southeast. Conclusion: Mortality from alcohol-associated liver disease increased in the most recent period and remained strongly concentrated among men, with marked social inequalities and territorial heterogeneity, indicating the need for prevention, timely diagnosis, and regionalized care networks.

VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES AS CAUSES OF DEATH IN BRAZIL: A NEGLECTED EXPRESSION OF NUTRITIONAL VULNERABILITIES, 2010–2024

Objective: To analyze mortality due to vitamin deficiencies in Brazil by five-year trends, sociodemographic profile, place of death, and territorial distribution from 2010 to 2024. Methods: Descriptive ecological study using Mortality Information System data. Deaths of residents whose underlying cause was classified under ICD-10 codes E50–E56 were grouped into 2010–2014, 2015–2019, and 2020–2024. Frequencies, proportions, ratios, and percentage changes were calculated. Results: A total of 940 deaths were recorded. The number increased from 231 to 424 between the first and third periods (83.55%), accelerating in the most recent period. Men accounted for 75.94% of deaths in 2020–2024, when the male-to-female ratio reached 3.16. People aged 60 years or older represented 54.72% of deaths. The Southeast recorded 156 deaths in the last period, followed by the Northeast with 121 and the South with 87. São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, and Paraná jointly accounted for 55.66% of occurrences. Conclusion: The growth in absolute burden, aging profile, and territorial heterogeneity reveal rare but relevant sentinel events, requiring nutritional surveillance, timely diagnosis, integrated care, and continuous improvement of mortality information.

Temporal trends in mortality with obesity recorded as the underlying cause in Espírito Santo, Brazil (2010–2023): an ecological time-series study

Introduction: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease associated with high morbidity and mortality and represents a major public health challenge in Brazil. Objective: To analyze temporal trends in deaths in which obesity was recorded as the underlying cause in Espírito Santo, Brazil, between 2010 and 2023. Methods: An ecological time-series study was conducted using data from the Mortality Information System (SIM). Deaths with obesity recorded as the underlying cause (ICD-10: E66) and its subcategories (E66.0 – E66.9) were included. Mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated, and temporal trends were assessed using Prais-Winsten regression. Results: A total of 1,089 deaths were identified, with a mean age of 55.7 years, predominantly among women (62.9%). Unspecified obesity accounted for 76.9% of all records. A significant downward trend in mortality was observed, with an average annual reduction of 5.7 deaths (p < 0.001). Mortality rates decreased from 4.04 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 to 0.86 per 100,000 in 2023, corresponding to an average annual reduction of 7.2% (p = 0.009). Conclusion: There was a significant reduction in deaths in which obesity was recorded as the underlying cause in Espírito Santo between 2010 and 2023. However, these findings should be interpreted with caution, as obesity is frequently recorded as a contributing rather than an underlying cause of death. The findings highlight the importance of improving death certification practices to enhance the accuracy of mortality statistics related to obesity.
