Advanced Antenna Architectures for 5G/6G Communication and Radar Sensing: From Sub-6 GHz to Terahertz Applications
Abstract
Next-generation wireless systems demand antennas that simultaneously satisfy stringent requirements across a vast frequency span from sub-6 GHz to the terahertz (THz) regime while supporting integrated sensing functionalities. This paper presents a unified study of advanced antenna designs across five distinct deployment scenarios: (i) a wideband indoor ceiling-mount antenna for 5G FR1 achieving 78.8% relative bandwidth (1.7–3.91 GHz), (ii) a dielectric-resonator-antenna (DRA) phased array-in-package for FR2 mmWave with 53.9% bandwidth and beam scanning up to ±56°, (iii) a high-gain Fresnel lens antenna for 24 GHz wind-profile radar delivering 31 dBi with four reconfigurable beams, (iv) a non-uniform sparse planar array for 79 GHz blade-clearance radar achieving 1.7° angular resolution, and (v) a graphene-based triangular microstrip patch for 6G THz aeronautical communication resonating at 6.82 THz with S11 = −95.71 dB and VSWR = 1.00. Simulated performance metrics are compared cross-scenario and benchmarked against prior art, establishing a scenario-specific methodology bridging communications and sensing within 5G/6G ISAC frameworks.
