Abstract
Over the last decade, there has been a shift in biotechnology from genome reading (sequencing) to genome writing (engineering). While significant progress has been made in prokaryotes and yeast, genome writing remains in its infancy in plants. Unlike their complex nuclear genomes, the compact and biotechnologically attractive plastid genome represents an ideal target to launch plant genome writing at scale.
