SAMCHYKIVKA PAINTING IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL SPACE FROM DECLINE TO CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The article analyses Samchykivka painting as a local phenomenon of Ukrainian folk decorative art. The historical preconditions for its emergence, the specific features of its development and decline during the twentieth century, and the processes of its revival in the late twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries are examined. Particular attention is paid to the role of artists, creative centres, and initiatives aimed at preserving and popularising the tradition. The artistic and stylistic characteristics of Samchykivka painting, including its ornamental and narrative system, compositional structure, and colour palette, are identified. The transformation of traditional forms within contemporary cultural space is analysed, particularly the transfer of painting from the architectural environment to easel forms, design, and decorative and applied practices. The current state of Samchykivka painting and its promotion through art projects, educational initiatives, and cultural practices are considered. Its significance as an important factor in preserving national cultural heritage, shaping cultural memory, and affirming Ukrainian identity under contemporary sociocultural conditions is emphasised.
