Abstract

People living with HIV (PLHIV) exist within a vortex of multidimensional challenges that extend far beyond clinical boundaries deeply touching psychosocial aspects that lead to spoiled identity due to structural stigma. Acknowledging the limitations of face-to-face approaches in formal healthcare facilities which are often dominated by rigid medical authority. This study aims to formulate a contextual technology based peer support communication model to restore the social resilience of PLHIV in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach with an explorative-constructive design this study involved 8 informants (5 PLHIV and 3 non-PLHIV companions) selected via purposive sampling until data saturation was reached. Data were collected through method triangulation, comprising in-depth interviews, digital participant observation (netnography), and documentation. Reflexive thematic analysis reveals a paradigm shift: the definition of a “peer” has metamorphosed into experiential homophily, demonstrating that empathetic non-PLHIV companions can play a central role. Furthermore, a layered Communication Privacy Management is evident; non-PLHIV supporters establish thick boundaries focusing on pragmatic adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. Whereas the resolution of profound psychological trauma is exclusively navigated by fellow PLHIV peers through boundary permeability. Crucially, organic digital spaces (such as WhatsApp) take over the role of a hyperpersonal safe space, facilitating faceless self-disclosure immune to the threat of stigma. As a synthesis, this study constructs the “Hybrid Peer Support Communication Model”, underpinned by actor inclusivity (demedicalization), tiered messaging strategies, and the utilization of organic digital infrastructure. This intervention is empirically proven to restore the social resilience of PLHIV empowering them to reclaim full agency over their life narratives.
