Interactive Effect of Nitrogen and Silicon Levels on Yield and Yield Attributes of Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during the kharif seasons of 2024 and 2025 at the Experimental Farm, Department of Agronomy, School of Agricultural Sciences, Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen and silicon levels on the yield attributes and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The experiment was laid out in a Randomised Block Design with three replications and comprised nine treatment combinations involving the recommended dose of fertilisers (RDF) and varying levels of silicon applied through broadcasting and foliar application. The results showed that silicon application significantly influenced the yield attributes and yield of rice. Among the treatments, RDF combined with 120 kg Si ha⁻¹ through broadcasting (T₅) recorded the highest number of panicles (286.78 m⁻²), panicle length (26.08 cm), grains per panicle (83.06), and test weight (26.18 g). The same treatment also produced the maximum grain yield (5365.44 kg ha⁻¹), straw yield (7759.62 kg ha⁻¹), and harvest index (42.76%), which were significantly superior to the other treatments. The improvement in yield and yield attributes may be attributed to enhanced nutrient uptake, increased photosynthetic efficiency, better grain filling, and improved assimilate translocation under silicon application. The study indicated that the combined application of RDF and 120 kg Si ha⁻¹ through broadcasting is an effective nutrient management strategy for maximising rice productivity under the agro-climatic conditions of western Uttar Pradesh.

Efficacy of Nutripearls Fertilizer on Yield Components and Productivity of Transplanted Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

A field experiment was carried out during the Kharif season of 2022 at the Research Farm of the Department of Agronomy, JNKVV, Jabalpur (M.P.), to evaluate the effects of Nutripearls, an organic acid-based granular fertiliser, on the yield components and productivity of transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. JR 206). The trial was laid out in a Randomised Block Design (RBD) with nine treatment combinations involving graded levels of the Recommended Dose of Fertilisers (RDF) and Nutripearls applied at the tillering and panicle initiation (PI) stages. The results demonstrated significant variations among treatments in yield attributes and overall productivity. Application of 100% RDF + Nutripearls @ 50 kg/ha at the tillering and PI stages (T2) recorded superior growth and yield parameters, including the maximum number of effective tillers (406.5/m2), panicle length (27.87 cm), and sound grains per panicle (196.27), along with the lowest number of sterile grains per panicle (6.47). Consequently, T2 produced the highest straw yield (7582.20 kg/ha) and harvest index (43.91%), markedly outperforming both 100% RDF alone (T8) and the untreated control (T9). Higher doses of Nutripearls (75 kg/ha and 100 kg/ha) did not offer significant improvements over the 50 kg/ha rate. Overall, integrating Nutripearls at 50 kg/ha alongside 100% RDF can enhance nutrient availability and crop partitioning efficiency, indicating its potential for maximising transplanted rice yields under the experimental conditions.

Study on the Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Growth, Yield Attributes and Yield of Basmati Rice

A field experiment was conducted during the rainy (kharif) seasons of 2020 and 2021 at the Research Farm of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, to evaluate integrated nutrient management in transplanted basmati rice. Ten treatments comprising graded levels of the recommended dose of NPK fertiliser, pressmud, vermicompost, and NPK-solubilising microbial consortia were evaluated in a split-plot design with three replications. Plant height, tiller number, dry matter accumulation, yield attributes, grain and straw yields, biological yield, and harvest index were recorded. The application of 125% of the recommended NPK dose produced the highest plant height at harvest (116.2 cm), number of tillers at harvest (262 m⁻²), dry matter accumulation at harvest (1,101.4 g m⁻²), panicle length (26.5 cm), filled grains per panicle (84), grain yield (46.1 q ha⁻¹), straw yield (63.8 q ha⁻¹), biological yield (109.9 q ha⁻¹), and harvest index (41.9%). The control recorded the lowest grain yield (22.4 q ha⁻¹) and biological yield (69.8 q ha⁻¹). However, 75% NPK + pressmud at 1.5 t ha⁻¹ + NPK consortia and 100% NPK + NPK consortia produced statistically comparable values to 125% NPK for most growth and yield parameters. These findings indicate that combining mineral fertiliser with organic and microbial inputs can maintain competitive crop performance while reducing reliance on fertiliser application above the recommended dose.

Effects of Different Levels of DAP on Agronomical Characteristics and Yield of Mung bean

Phosphorus deficiency is one of the main factors restricting mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) production in many parts of the world, including Afghanistan. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out in the 2025 growing season at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kabul University, to determine the influence of different diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer levels on mung bean growth and yield. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications, consisting of four DAP rates: 0, 30, 60, and 90 kg ha⁻¹. The collected growth and yield data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and mean comparisons were performed using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at a 5% probability level. The application of DAP fertilizer significantly improved plant height, shoot dry matter, number of branches, pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight. However, leaf number, grain weight per square meter, seed yield, and harvest index did not show significant differences among fertilizer treatments, although higher values were generally observed compared with the control treatment. The maximum seed yield (870.83 kg ha⁻¹) was obtained from the application of 60 kg DAP ha⁻¹, while the highest performance for most growth and yield-related traits was recorded under 90 kg DAP ha⁻¹. The findings suggest that DAP fertilizer application enhances mung bean growth and yield performance under the environmental conditions of Kabul. Among the tested fertilizer levels, 60 kg DAP ha⁻¹ was found to be the most effective rate for achieving higher grain yield.

Interactive Effect of Sulphur and Zinc Nutrients on Growth, Yield Attributes and Productivity of Sweet Corn (Zea mays L. saccharata Sturt) under Rainfed Conditions

A three-year field experiment was conducted at the College Farm, College of Agriculture, Navsari Agricultural University, Bharuch, Gujarat, during the kharif seasons of 2022–23, 2023–24, and 2024–25 to evaluate the growth, yield attributes, and productivity of sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharata Sturt) under rainfed conditions. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomised block design with three replications and nine treatment combinations comprising three sulphur levels (0, 20, and 40 kg S ha⁻¹) and three zinc levels (0, 2.5, and 5.0 kg Zn ha⁻¹). In the pooled analysis, sulphur at 40 kg S ha⁻¹ significantly increased plant population at 30 DAS, plant height at 30 DAS and harvest, number of cobs per plant, fresh grain weight per cob, average cob weight, green cob yield, and stover yield. Zinc at 5.0 kg Zn ha⁻¹ significantly improved fresh grain weight per cob, average cob weight, green cob yield, and stover yield; however, its effects on pooled plant population, plant height, and number of cobs per plant were non-significant. The sulphur × zinc interaction was non-significant for all measured variables. The highest pooled green cob and stover yields were 8.38 and 10.84 t ha⁻¹, respectively, with 40 kg S ha⁻¹, and 8.17 and 10.48 t ha⁻¹, respectively, with 5.0 kg Zn ha⁻¹. The results indicate that the observed crop responses were primarily associated with the independent effects of sulphur and zinc.

Interactive Effects of Water Stress and Foliar Application of Agrochemicals on Productivity and Profitability of Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) under Arid Conditions

A field experiment was conducted during the rabi season of 2024-25 at the College of Agriculture, Agriculture University, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), to evaluate the effect of water stress and foliar application of agrochemicals on productivity and profitability of chia (Salvia hispanica L.). The experiment was carried out in a split plot design with three irrigation levels, recommended irrigation (I0), one irrigation skip (I1) and two irrigation skips (I2), as main-plot treatments and four foliar-applied agrochemicals, control (C0), thiourea @ 2% (C1), potassium nitrate @ 100 ppm (C2) and salicylic acid @ 100 ppm (C3), as sub-plot treatments, replicated thrice. Results revealed that deficit irrigation significantly reduced growth and yield of chia. Recommended irrigation recorded the highest plant height, dry matter accumulation, yield attributes and seed yield (540.02 kg ha–1). Among agrochemicals, foliar application of potassium nitrate proved most effective, producing maximum spikes per plant (13.28), spike length (11.28 cm), spike weight (12.28 g) and seed yield (507.25 kg ha–1). Economic analysis showed the highest gross return (₹81,575 ha–1), net return (₹48,302 ha–1) and B:C ratio (2.45) under recommended irrigation, while potassium nitrate recorded maximum profitability among agrochemicals (B:C ratio 2.45). The study concludes that integration of adequate irrigation with foliar application of potassium nitrate is an effective strategy for enhancing productivity and profitability of chia under arid conditions.

Effect of Fertility Levels on Growth and Yield of Different Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) Varieties

A field experiment was carried out during the rabi season of 2025-26 at the Agricultural Research Farm, School of Agricultural Sciences, Jaipur National University, Jaipur, Rajasthan. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomised block design with three replications. The field experiment consisted of three varieties, viz., (i) Pratap Alsi 2, (ii) Kota Barani Alsi 4 and (iii) Kota Barani Alsi 4, and four fertility levels, viz., (i) Control, (ii) 75% RDF, (iii) 100% RDF and (iv) 125% RDF. The soil of the experimental field was sandy in texture, with a pH of 7.58, organic carbon (OC) of 0.43%, available N, P and K of 217.30, 20.28 and 219.20 kg ha-1, respectively, and sulphur of 20.90 mg kg-1. The results indicated that higher growth parameters viz., plant height, number of primary & secondary branches, DMA, CGR and RGR; maximum yield attributes and yield viz., number of capsules plant-1 (60.78), number of seeds capsule-1 (8.50), test weight (10.00 g), seed yield (1769 kg ha-1), stover yield (4118 kg ha-1), biological yield (5886 kg ha-1) and harvest index (29.77%) were significantly higher for the variety PA 2. However, among the fertility levels, the results showed that higher growth parameters viz., plant height, number of primary & secondary branches, DMA, CGR and RGR; maximum yield attributes and yield viz., number of capsules plant-1 (56.17), number of seeds capsule-1 (7.86), test weight (9.24 g), seed yield (1610 kg ha-1), stover yield (3800 kg ha-1), biological yield (5410 kg ha-1) and harvest index (29.56%) were recorded with the application of 125% RDF; however, this treatment was statistically at par with the application of 100% RDF. Examination of the data indicated that the interaction effect of varieties and fertility levels was significant. Results indicated that the application of PA 2 + 125% RDF gave the maximum plant height at harvest (83.68 cm), DMA at harvest (9.21 g plant-1), seed yield (2180 kg ha-1) and stover yield (4940 kg ha-1), and it was statistically at par with the application of PA 2 + 100% RDF. However, the minimum values of these parameters were recorded in KBA 4 + control.
