Abstract

This study examined the influence of transformational leadership and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) on employees’ job performance in selected Nigerian public organisations. A correlational survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 175 employees selected through stratified random sampling across five public organisations in Abuja. Standardised instruments measured transformational leadership dimensions, OCB, and job performance. Pearson’s correlation, multiple regression, and an independent samples t-test were used for data analysis. The findings revealed significant positive relationships between all dimensions of transformational leadership and job performance. Furthermore, OCB significantly predicted job performance, accounting for 30.2% of the explained variance. Among the OCB dimensions, courtesy and conscientiousness made significant independent contributions, whereas altruism, sportsmanship, and civic virtue were not significant predictors. No significant gender difference was found in job performance. The study concludes that transformational leadership and positive citizenship behaviours are essential for enhancing employee performance and organisational effectiveness in Nigerian public organisations.
