Abstract

This paper explores the pivotal contributions of women to nation building through a theological reflection on John 20:11–18, where Mary Magdalene is the first witness of the resurrected Christ. Her role as the "apostle to the apostles" presents a transformative biblical paradigm for understanding women’s leadership and agency in both ecclesiastical and societal spheres. The resurrection encounter redefines traditional gender roles, emphasizing that women are not only recipients of divine grace but also active bearers of the gospel and initiators of change. In many African societies, including Nigeria, women have historically contributed significantly to community development, education, health care, peacebuilding, and economic advancement, often without recognition. Mary’s experience symbolizes how theological narratives can empower women’s voices and affirm their God-given capacity for leadership. By analyzing the Johannine text alongside contemporary realities, this reflection affirms that nation building requires an inclusive approach that values the gifts, wisdom, and resilience of women. Theologically, the resurrection account invites the Church to challenge gender biases and to advocate for justice and equality as part of its mission in nation building. It also underscores the importance of bearing truthful witness, nurturing hope, and fostering transformation in broken contexts. Women, like Mary Magdalene, are agents of resurrection — called to speak life, truth, and healing into the soul of the nation. The paper concludes by urging both faith communities and policymakers to create space for women’s participation and leadership in all sectors of national life, recognizing that sustainable development is inseparable from gender justice and theological integrity.
