Combined Application of Poultry Manure, Gliricidia sepium and NPK Fertilizer on Soil Nutrients Status and Maize Performance in South West, Nigeria

Abstract

Soil fertility decline caused by continuous cultivation is a major constraint to sustainable maize production in tropical regions. Integrated nutrient management, which combines organic sources such as poultry manure and Gliricidia sepium with inorganic NPK fertiliser, can improve soil nutrient status, enhance soil properties and increase crop yield more effectively than sole applications. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of combined poultry manure, Gliricidia sepium and NPK 15:15:15 on soil nutrient status and maize yield in a 3 by 2 factorial experiment involving 5 t ha⁻¹ poultry manure, 5 t ha⁻¹ Gliricidia sepium leaves and 150 kg ha⁻¹ NPK 15:15:15 arranged in a randomised complete block design. The treatment combinations were replicated three times. Data were collected on maize growth, grain-yield parameters and soil chemical characteristics, and were subjected to analysis of variance using SPSS Version 16.0. The results showed that growth, yield and soil nutrient content were significantly (P < 0.05) influenced by the treatments. The highest growth parameters were obtained with the combined application of poultry manure and Gliricidia sepium, while the combined use of NPK 15:15:15, Gliricidia sepium and poultry manure produced the highest maize grain-yield parameters. The combined use of poultry manure with Gliricidia sepium significantly improved soil nutrient status. Sole NPK 15:15:15 application reduced soil pH compared with the combined use of poultry manure, Gliricidia sepium and NPK 15:15:15. Organic wastes should therefore be integrated with inorganic fertiliser to enhance soil nutrient status and crop yield in the study area.

Comparative Effects of Maize Cob Biochar and Inorganic Fertilizer on Soil Properties and Maize Productivity

Declining soil fertility is a major constraint to sustainable crop production in sub-Saharan Africa, and sole reliance on inorganic fertilizers raises concerns about long-term soil health. This study evaluated the effects of maize cob biochar and NPK fertilizer, applied individually and in combination, on soil proper...

Influence of NPK and Gliricidia-based organic fertilizers on soil fertility and performance of millet in Sokoto, Nigeria

Millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a staple crop in semi-arid Nigeria, but its productivity is constrained by poor soil fertility. While inorganic NPK fertilizers can boost yields, their long-term use may degrade soil health. Organic alternatives like Gliricidia sepium remain underutilized despite their potential to improv...

Improving properties of sandy soil and production of Phaseolus vulgaris cultivation using Azolla pinnata, eggshells, and biochar

Sandy soils are characterized by low organic matter content, weak nutrient retention, and limited water-holding capacity, which restrict crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of biochar, Azolla pinnata, and eggshell powder on soil properties and the pr...

Growth and Biomass Response of Maize ( Zea mays L.) to Integrated NPK Fertilization and Manure Application

Fertilization is one of the key factors in improving the growth and productivity of maize, particularly under conditions of low soil fertility. The use of inorganic fertilizers alone often does not provide optimal results without the support of organic amendments that improve soil conditions. This study aimed to evalua...

Evaluating Manures and Biochar on Carbon and Nutrient Dynamics in Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) Field

Declining soil organic matter and imbalanced fertiliser use threaten sustainable agricultural production in Bangladesh, where limited arable land demands efficient integrated nutrient management. This study assessed the effects of biochar, vermicompost, cowdung, and poultry manure, each combined with an Integrated Plan...

Synergistic Effects of Organic Manures and Nano-DAP on Growth, Productivity and Nutrient Uptake in Wheat

A significant issue in the wheat production systems is the need to increase the efficiency of nutrient use without compromising soil health. This paper has examined the synergistic impact of organic manures, Nano-DAP on growth, yield and soil fertility of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under field conditions during the R...
