Abstract

The article proposes that rape culture is a consequence of, and perpetuated through, the entrenched social construct of toxic masculinity. Rape culture marked by the acceptance of sexual violence, blaming victims, and objectifying women, flourished in settings where masculinity is narrowly interpreted as dominance, aggression, and suppression of emotions. This paper analyses key aspects of toxic masculinity such as stoicism, exaggerated sexuality, and equating power with control-to demonstrate their direct role in fostering the mindsets and actions that sustain rape culture. It contends that toxic masculinity builds an environment where empathy is undervalued, consent Is treated as a victory rather than an ongoing conversation, and men are pressured into silence or complicity. Therefore, approached to ending rape culture that rely only on legal changes or empowering women, though important, are insufficient. A deeper and more transformative solution is needed: actively redefining strength and masculinity to emphasise emotional intelligence, vulnerability, empathy, and mutual respect. By challenging the harmful stereotypes that box men in, we not only address a root cause of gender-based violence but also liberate men from a prescriptive identity that is detrimental to their own mental and emotional well-being. The article concludes that ending rape culture is contingent upon a collective, societal effort to foster healthier, more holistic models of masculinity, thereby creating a world where strength is measured not by domination, but by compassion and integrity.
