AN ADAPTIVE MODEL FOR SELECTING SYMMETRIC CRYPTOGRAPHIC ALGORITHMS IN INFOCOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Abstract
The article examines current challenges in ensuring effective cryptographic protection of information in modern infocommunication systems amid the rapid development of digital technologies, the growth of data volumes, and the complexity of cyber threats. Particular attention was paid to analyzing the features of using symmetric encryption algorithms as a basic tool for ensuring real-time information confidentiality. A comprehensive comparative analysis of the AES, "Kalina," and "Strumok" algorithms was conducted, considering their architectural characteristics, level of cryptographic strength, performance, scalability, and efficiency in resource utilisation. An experimental verification of the model was performed by benchmarking real software implementations of the algorithms, which confirmed the theoretically established performance ranking and agreement with the theoretically expected algorithm selection in two of the three scenarios. It was established that traditional approaches to using fixed cryptographic algorithms do not provide the necessary level of adaptability in the changing environment of information systems. In particular, it was found that the effectiveness of a given algorithm depends significantly on the type of system, available computing resources, data processing latency requirements, and the level of potential threats. This necessitates developing new approaches to selecting cryptographic mechanisms that emphasize dynamic adaptation. The article proposes an adaptive model for selecting a symmetric cryptographic algorithm, based on multi-criteria optimization and taking into account key parameters of the system's operation, in particular, the cryptographic strength, performance, and flexibility of the algorithms. The model involves forming an integrated assessment of algorithm effectiveness using weighting factors, which allows the selection process to be adapted to specific operating conditions. Scenarios for applying the model in general-purpose information systems, telecommunication networks, Internet of Things systems, embedded devices and critical infrastructure facilities are considered. The practical significance of the results lies in improving the efficiency of cryptographic information protection by optimizing the balance between security and performance, reducing computational costs, potentially reducing energy consumption, and increasing the flexibility of information systems. The proposed approach can be used in the development of modern cryptographic services, integrated into software and hardware complexes of information protection and applied in systems with increased requirements for reliability and security.
