Abstract

The aim of the study was to examine the digitisation of archival documents not merely as a technical conversion process but as a mechanism of social and intergenerational communication through which society gains access to and transmits historical memory, while also analysing its role in preserving the nation’s historical heritage. The methodology was grounded in the principles of comprehensiveness and historicism, employing approaches derived from digital humanities, alongside comparative analysis, synthesis, as well as systemic and interdisciplinary methods. The study identified several negative factors affecting the process of digitising archival documents, including the incomplete regulatory and legal framework, insufficient funding, and deficiencies in the technical and human resource capacities of Kazakhstan’s archival sector. Addressing these challenges requires a systemic and integrated approach encompassing the development of a modern regulatory framework, increased funding for archival activities, the modernisation of infrastructure and technologies, professional training, and the implementation of innovative digital solutions. These measures have enhanced the efficiency of archival management, safeguarded the national historical heritage, and ensured its accessibility for future generations. The application of the aforementioned methods and approaches not only deepened the understanding of the current state of archival digitisation in Kazakhstan but also revealed the opportunities and risks associated with this critical initiative. Such a comprehensive approach enables more effective planning and implementation of digitisation projects, ultimately contributing to the preservation of the country’s historical memory and cultural heritage. The digitisation of archival documents in Kazakhstan is aimed at creating electronic archives that preserve original materials, function as communication channels between archival institutions and society, and transmit historical memory to future generations within contemporary digital infrastructure
