Optimizing Business Process Placement in Fog Networks for Industrial Internet of Things Applications
Abstract
This thesis investigated how industrial business processes can be executed on nearby edge devices to reduce delays caused by distant cloud systems. It developed methods for placing and coordinating business process activities on resource-limited edge devices while preserving their correct execution order. It introduced lightweight coordination, optimisation, runtime adaptation, and methods for placing related process activities together. Simulations of industrial maintenance and construction-site safety scenarios showed faster responses, reduced reliance on cloud systems, improved throughput, and more complete process execution at the edge. These findings support more responsive and dependable Industry 4.0 systems.
