Poster: Post-Quantum Migration in 5G: Security Dependencies, Challenges, and Open Questions
Abstract
Preparing 5G for quantum adversaries requires more than substituting quantum-resistant algorithms: migration must preserve security while meeting operational constraints that differ across network functions. This poster presents an area-based framework covering bootstrapping, subscriber identity protection, primary authentication, and core-network communications, focusing on Transport Layer Security (TLS) protection of service-based interfaces (SBIs). The framework maps existing mechanisms, security objectives, candidate changes, and deployment constraints. Building on this framework, we propose a unified benchmark with common evaluation principles and area-specific workloads and requirements. Planned evaluation will examine how cryptographic choices and operating conditions affect latency, communication costs, resource use, and reliability. The goal is to identify feasible migration conditions and areas requiring further protocol or implementation research.
