Structural and semantic types of metaphors in the idiostyle of Bel Kaufman (based on the novel “Up The Down Staircase”)
Abstract
This article is devoted to the study of the mechanisms of metaphorization in the space of an artistic work. The paper examines the main theoretical approaches to the typology of metaphors that have developed in Russian and foreign philology. The methods of analysis, synthesis, and generalization of the works of leading linguists and philologists (V. P. Moskvin, N. D. Arutyunova, J. Lakoff and M. Johnson, M. B. Nikitin) are used, and the structural and semantic classifications of V. P. Moskvin's metaphors are analyzed in detail. The study revealed metaphors of various levels (verbal, phrasal, textual) in the novel “Up the Down Staircase” by American writer Bel Kaufman and their role in shaping artistic reality. It is noted that the systematic use of metaphors in the epistolary-documentary novel allows the author to create multifaceted images of characters and reveal the ideological and thematic content of the entire work.
