Abstract

A novel Boost converter topology with a very high and adjustable voltage conversion ratio is proposed in this work. The proposed converter achieves an enhanced voltage gain while utilizing only a single active switch, which simplifies its structure and control. The voltage stress across this switch is significantly reduced, which enables the use of semiconductors (such as MOSFETs) with lower on-resistance in some applications, thereby reducing conduction and switching losses and lowering the overall cost. Moreover, the converter exhibits a continuous input current, which is an important feature for many practical power electronics applications where input current ripple needs to be minimized. Operating principles, steady-state characteristics, and mathematical modeling of the new converter are detailed in this work. All main performance claims are verified by both simulation and experimental tests carried out on a laboratory prototype, hence confirming the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed topology.
