Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease whose prevalence continues to rise and is no longer confined to adults, as it is now increasingly found among adolescents. Limited knowledge about hypertension can influence adolescents’ attitudes and behaviors related to its prevention. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and behaviors regarding hypertension prevention among 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 8 Pandeglang. This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling with a total sample of 122 respondents selected using the Slovin formula from a population of 175 students. Knowledge was measured using a 24-item questionnaire, attitude using a 10-item Likert-scale questionnaire, and behavior using a 10-item Likert-scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed a p-value of 0.012, indicating a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes toward hypertension prevention, and a p-value of 0.009, indicating a significant relationship between knowledge and hypertension prevention behavior. It is concluded that the better the level of adolescents’ knowledge about hypertension, the better their attitudes and behaviors toward its prevention, so health education about hypertension needs to be strengthened through school-based health promotion programs.
