A sharp increase in gas uptake over a narrow pressure range can occur for fluids confined in nanoporous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), reflecting a transformation between distinct adsorption states, often accompanied by the existence of metastable states. Understanding how co-adsorbed species modify this behavior is important for predicting and optimizing gas storage and separation. Here, we investigate the effect of CO2 on the adsorption transformation of confined CH4 in rigid IRMOF-1 and IRMOF-8. Transition-Matrix Monte Carlo (TMMC) simulations were performed for systems containing 0-75 and 0-150 CO2 molecules in IRMOF-1 and IRMOF-8, respectively. While the addition of CO2 decreases the maximum CH4 uptake, consistent with competition for pore space, remarkably, the presence of CO2 significantly shifts the discontinuity in the CH4 adsorption isotherm to substantially lower pressures relative to the pure CH4 system. This promotion of the high-density CH4 phase at lower pressures demonstrates that CO2 substantially alters the thermodynamic landscape governing confined CH4 through changes in both fluid-fluid and fluid-framework interactions. These results establish CO2 as a thermodynamic modifier of confined CH4 behavior and suggest that controlled co-adsorption provides a means of tuning adsorption transformations in nanoporous materials.
Gas-responsive magnetic response arising from spin-crossover (SCO) phenomena is rare yet highly attractive for molecular sensing and spintronics. However, it remains unclear how gas uptake influences SCO behaviour when the two phenomena occur in separate temperature regimes. Herein, we report a strong influence of CO2...

Controlling MOF nucleation on zeolite surfaces remains challenging when metal ions are freely supplied in solution, often resulting in poorly regulated interfaces. Herein, Mg2+-exchanged platelet clinoptilolite (Mg-PCP) was used as a confined metal source to direct the in situ growth of Mg-MOF-74-related sol–gel specie...

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on Cu surfaces is constrained by the scaling relations among intermediate adsorption energies. We demonstrate that Cu-terminated Ti3CuC2, featuring an atomically thin Cu monolayer, is an efficient CO2RR catalyst. Charge transfer from Ti3C2 to Cu enriches the reaction s...

Selective CO2 capture from dry blast furnace gas (BFG) and moisture-varying steam methane reforming (SMR) flue gases using six heterogeneous silica adsorbents of comparable porosity, viz., StH and EnH, is quantified via classical molecular simulations. In these adsorbents, CO2-philicity from pure and mixture feeds is e...
To examine the mechanisms of CO2/CH4 competitive adsorption and behaviour of the gas-water interaction under nano-confined spaces, this study built heterogeneous shale matrix models with a variety of pore shapes by using the molecular dynamics simulation method. It has been shown that within the temperature range of 29...
Shale gas reservoirs represent important energy resources, and the injection of unseparated flue gas has been proposed as a potential strategy for coupling geological carbon storage with enhanced shale gas recovery. In this study, density functional theory calculations were employed to systematically investigate facet-...
