Digital Transformation And Sustainable Development In India: A Framework For Technology-Enabled Resource Efficiency
Abstract
Digital transformation has emerged as an important driver of sustainable development by improving resource efficiency, institutional performance, and environmental management. The present study examines the role of digital technologies in promoting sustainable development in India, with particular emphasis on technology-enabled resource efficiency. A qualitative, descriptive, and analytical research approach is adopted, drawing on secondary sources, including academic literature, government reports, and institutional publications. The study explores the applications of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and big data analytics in agriculture, energy, manufacturing, urban infrastructure, and circular economy practices. It also considers the digitization of money through digital payment systems, mobile banking, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and emerging digital currency initiatives as an additional dimension of India's digital transformation. These technologies offer opportunities to improve energy efficiency, water conservation, material productivity, waste management, transaction efficiency, and financial inclusion. However, challenges such as digital inequality, inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, cybersecurity risks, and the environmental footprint of digital systems may limit their sustainability benefits. The study proposes an integrated conceptual framework connecting digital transformation, technology-enabled capabilities, resource efficiency, and sustainable development outcomes, emphasizing the importance of institutional governance, digital inclusion, and environmentally responsible technological adoption.
