Abstract

A classical theorem due to Gleason, Kahane, and Zelazko states that every complex unital Banach algebra is ordinary, meaning that any linear functional mapping elements into their spectrum is a character. While Roitman and Sternfeld extended this property to algebras with bounded spectra-showing in particular that the algebra C(X) of continuous functions is ordinary when X is pseudocompact-the general case of C(X) for arbitrary topological spaces X appears to be open, as we could not locate any reference in this direction. In this paper, we show that the pseudocompactness condition is unnecessary, that is, C(X) is ordinary for every topological space X. This fact is obtained as a consequence of a more general result characterizing positive characters on a purely algebraic generalization of unital C*-algebras, which we introduce under the name of AC*-algebras. As applications, we obtain two necessary and sufficient conditions for a Tychonoff space X to be realcompact in terms of 1-evaluating linear functionals on C(X) and their continuity with respect to the compact-open topology. Finally, we establish a Banach--Stone type theorem showing that two realcompact spaces X and Y are homeomorphic if and only if C(X) and C(Y) are linearly isomorphic via a map that preserves invertibility.

Commutativity of Banach Algebras with Derivations and Local Identities

In this paper we prove a transfer principle for Banach algebras and use it to show that, for local identities of product type, the algebraic hypotheses of the commutativity theorems of Yood type are superfluous. Such theorems assume an algebraic identity only on a small part of the algebra and only with an exponent tha...

Real Nullstellensatz for nilpotent Lie algebras

We prove a real Nullstellensatz for the universal enveloping algebra U(g) of a nilpotent finite-dimensional real Lie algebra g: An ideal of U(g) is real if and only if it is the intersection of kernels of irreducible integrable *-representations of U(g) by (in general unbounded) operators on a Hilbert space. For this,...

Spectral isometries of unital $C^*$-algebras

This paper provides a human digestion of a proof of the spectral isometry conjecture for $C^*$-algebras found by GPT-6 Astra. We prove that every unital surjective complex-linear spectral isometry between unital $C^*$-algebras is a Jordan isomorphism. Without the assumption that the map preserves the identity, it is a...

Structure of Nonlinear Maps Preserving A*B − ξBA onto an Arbitrary ∗-Algebra

We show that every bijection Ψ between complex ∗-algebras satisfying Ψ(A*B−ξBA)=Ψ(A)*Ψ(B)−ξΨ(B)Ψ(A), for a fixed ξ≠0, is additive as soon as its domain is a prime unital ∗-algebra with a nontrivial projection, with nothing assumed about its codomain at all. In the additivity theorems for products built from the involut...

Regular simple nuclear C*-algebras

We prove Z-stability for all simple, separable, pure, nuclear C*-algebras. Combining this with very recent work of Thiel completes the proof of the Toms-Winter conjecture. We do this through the framework of II_1 factorial tracially complete C*-algebras. We characterise regularity for these algebras in various terms. I...
